ADDINGTON CLUB CANON BEAN’S LAST PLUNGE For 35 years Canon W. S. Bean has been a member of the Addington Swimming Club. For 30 of those years he has been patron, and In 1934 he was made a life-member. On Saturday, when the club opened its season, he was presented with a wallet. Although now in his eightieth year, Canon Bean took the first plunge into the bath. Before he did so he announced that it was his final plunge. He made the first opening plunge 27 years ago. Results of races were:— Schoolboys’ 25 Yards—C. Jones 1, C. Hancock 2. 50 Yards Open Handicap—J. Pyke 1, R. Moore 2. 50 Yards Open Breaststroke—Miss A. Kirk 1, R. Moore 2. Women’s 25 Yards—Miss A. Kirk 1. Miss J. Guest 2. Open Handicap Dive—E. Day 1. EAST CHRISTCHURCH CLUB The official opening of the East Christchurch Swimming Club’s season took place on Saturday afternoon. Mr C. Bryant, a life-member, who apologised for the absence of the president (Mr A. Donaldson) declared the season open. Reference was made to the loss sustained by the death of Mr E D Bishop, president of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, those present standing in silence. The first was .J a ken by L. The season was formally declared open by the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, who spoke of his long association with the baths.
