WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

THE PEAKS BRANCH There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Peaks Women s Institute, when Mrs Stokes presided. ) A proposal to begin drama classes in the various districts -was received from the Association for Country Education. The classes would be run on the same * lines as the dressmaking classes which t have been held in neighbouring disf tricls It was decided to hold the mati ter over until the next meeting. ’ Competitions were as follows: Best flower in my garden: Mrs L. Hassal 1. . Miss A. Gray 2, Mrs C. Mcjveegan 3; apple oie: Mrs Inch 1. Miss H. Keni nedy 2. Best bunch of radishes; Mrs i Inch 1, Mrs I. Bishell 2, Mrs W. N. t Hewett 3. Best design for Womens J Institute banner: Mrs H. Inch and Miss H Kennedy (equal) 1. Christmas gift: i Mrs McKeegan 1. Mrs Inch 2 and 3, An interesting demonstration on silk * art work was given by Misses H. Ken--1 nedy and B. Inch, and samples of the j finished work were shown. LOlll’RN BRANCH 1 3 The monthly meeting of the Loburn , Women’s Institute was held, with Miss c M. Barker presiding. A demonstration was given by Mrs Thompson, of Christchurch, on the making of posies and bouquets. The results of the competitions were as follows:—Best bloom; Mrs Macleod 1, Mrs Henry and Mrs Hopkins (equal) 2 Miss Barker 4. Jar of flowers: Mrs Pulley 1, Mrs Methercll and Mrs Henry (equal) 2. Mrs Baynon 4. Shortbread: Mrs Crowe 1, Mrs Howe 2, Miss Waters The hostesses were Mesdames Croft 1 and Kempthorne and Miss O. Crotty 3. i Bowl of pansies or violas: Mrs Lbdge i 1, Mrs Morrison 2. Mrs Elliott and - Miss J. Dalglish equal 3. The judges were Mrs O’Connor and j Mrs D. Mora. Mrs Lodge and Miss T. Lodge were the hostesses, and Mrs Thelning and Miss E. Thelning were in charge of the social half-hour. MASON’S FLAT BRANCH ’ The monthly meeting of the Mason’s Flat Women’s Institute was held, with Mrs F. Pope presiding. ■ Mrs Pope gave an account of the 5 half-yearly meeting of the North Can- ' terbury Federation that she had at- : tended as a delegate. Two members of the institute,. Mrs J. C.adcck, with Mrs H. French second and Mrs G. Jones third. An interesting talk on night life in Paris was given by Miss Gaarder, of Duvauchelle. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. Jones, I. Shirley, W. Jones. H. Mould, Misses N. Brankin. and Myrtle Webster. HORNBY BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Hornbv branch of the Women’s Institute was held recently. Final arrangements were made for the children’s fancy dress party, to be held in December. , The results of the home competition were as follows; —Waggon cloth: Mrs Lawson 1 and 2, Mrs Hepburn 3. Biscuits: Mrs Hepburn 1 and 2. Mrs Lawson 3. The competitions were judged by Mesdames Kolkman, Rugg, and F. Scott. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames I. Davis, Mills, and Bigham. OMIHI BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Omihi Women’s Institute was held in the Omihi Hall, with Mrs J. Sloss presiding. It was decided to hold a drama festival in April.’ Mrs Bishop, of the St. John Ambulance. gave an interesting practical demonstration on home nursing. The competition results were as follows:—Butter sponge: Mrs L. Russell 1, Miss J. Hamilton 2. Best bloom, rose: Miss Dorothy Sloss 1, Miss R. Symonds 2. Best three blooms: Mrs Stackhouse sen. 1, Miss Muriel Francis 2. Best bowl roses: Mrs M. Hamilton 1. Mrs L. Russell 2. Table centre: Miss Helen Stevenson 1, Miss Daphne Shaw 2. Ladies’ spray: Mrs G.
