MR AND MRS NORTON FRANCIS’ GUESTS

MANY VISITORS ENTERTAINED

Mr Norton Francis, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, and Mrs Francis entertained nearly 400 guests yesterday afternoon at a very enjoyable reception, held at their beautiful home in Rossall street. Overseas delegates to the Congress of Empire Chambers of Commerce, their wives and daughters, who arrived in, Christchurch yesterday morning from Wellington, were given an opportunity at the party of meeting, under the pleasantest conditions, members of the local Chamber of Commerce and other representative citizens. The grounds, gay ’ with pink and white blossom, azaleas, rhododendrons, and spring flowers, looked their best in the bright sunshine, and the lovely mauve wistaria that covered the front of the house was greatly admired. Mr and Mrs Francis welcomed the guests in the drawing room, and tea was served in a large marquee on the lawn. Many of the visitors showed much interest in the outdoor games, which they played with enthusiasm. Mrs Francis wore an attractive frock of pink-beige craquelle, ail over with fine black lines in floral design. It was trimmed with plisse pleated frills and finished with a black cire bow at the neckline in front. Her black coat was three-quarter length, and she wore a wide-brimmed black ballibuntl straw hat trimmed with black ribbon.

She was assisted by her daughters, Misses Jocelyn and Marjorie Francis, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs George Francis. Miss Jocelyn Francis wore a japonica-pink wool sheer frock, with vest of white Ottoman silk, and a wide black straw hat with bow of pink, white, green, and black ribbon in front; Miss Marjorie Francis wore a green and white patterned crepe de chine frock, and white straw hat with vari-coloured posy in front, and Mrs George Francis wore a basqued frock of brown floral marocain closely patterned in green, yellow, rust, and blue, and a wide-brimmed light brown straw hat.

Lady Elibank, who is staying with Mrs Francis for some days, wore a white and black patterned crepe frock with row of crystal buttons in front, gloves of the same material, black coat, and close-fitting black hat trimmed with black and white pompons.
