ATTITUDE TO WAR
ASSEMBLY’S STATEMENT AFFIRMED
DISCUSSION BY TIMARU PRESBYTERY
The. attitude o| the Presbyterian Church to war as decided by the assembly, was affirmed at a meeting of the Timaru Presbytery, over which the Moderator (the Rev. J. Baird) presided, Amplifying the statement 'submitted by the assembly, the Rev. F. H. Wilkinson said that he had been a member of the committee of the assembly when the question was dealt with. Some members had been avowed fjacifista, considering war a proceedng to Which the church should not give its approval, but Others were of opinion that war was necessary for the maintenance of law and order. In view of the circumstances* said Mr Wilkinson, it would be wise for the presbytery to express its feelings of concern at the deplorable drift toward the narrow, nationalistic outlook, which exalted preparation for war as a major civic duty rather than the exploration of every avenue for peace. War could never be a means by which Christian brotherhood cou'd be extended. It was decided to nominate the Rev. T. E. Riddle as Moderator of the assembly.
