OBITUARY

MRS LUTHER CAMPLIN Mrs Luther Camplin, a daughter of one of Canterbury's early settlers, died in her sleep at her home, Weld street, Feilding. Mrs Camplin was a., daughter of the late William Watson, of BroOkside. She was born at Brdokside 70 years ago, when that district was in its primitive state—a swainp covered with water, flax and raupo. Since her marriage 48 years ago* she had lived in the Feilding district. Mrs Camplin suffered a severe shock wheij two of her grandchildren were killed by the limited express three years ago. She had a stroke at that time and never recovered her Usual robus* health. Mrs Camplin is survived by a son, Mr Jack Camplin, and a daughter, Mrs Mason, and two brothers, Messrs Thomas Watson (Papakura) and Lancelot Watson (Oxford), ana one sister, -Mrs A. Withell (Christchurch). COMING-OF-AGE PARTY The coming-of-age of Betty, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs L. C. Doherty, Was celebrated at Dixieland, where a party was given in her honour. Dances and competitions were won by Miss V. Coates and Mr Menelaus and Miss D. Dodds and Mr J. Clements, and an exhibition dance was given by Miss Betty Dicks. Mr A. Snellmg was .master of ceremonies. Mr Doherty presented the customary key to his daughter. Music for the dancing was supplied by the Dawson*Winfield Orchestra. The guests were Mr and Mrs L. C. Miss Hull spoke of the work of the kindergartens, mentioning various former pupils who had gained distinction in later life.

Games were played, and a guessing competition was won by Mrs McKee. Musical items were given by Miss Laurenson, Mrs Butcher, and Mr Wilson, the accompanists being Mrs Riddout and Mr Hoyle. During the supper hour, a decorated birthday cake was cut by Mrs J. R. Evans, a foundation member of the Kindergarten Association. Mrs Evans and Miss Hull were congratulated on their 25 years’ association with the kindergarten. Dancing was enjoyed later in the evening. PARTY AT KAIAROI A kitchen evening party, organised by members of St, Bartholomew’s Church; Kaiapoi, was given in honour of Miss Clarice Giles, whose marriage - will take place sopn. An enjoyable even* ing was spent in games and dancing. Mrs S. W. Frost gave a recitation. The Rev. C. L. Sparrow spoke of the esteem in which the guest was held by all who knew her, and Mr L. Gram endorsed Mr Sparrow’s remarks. Miss Giles received many useful gifts, and Mr J. C. Frost thanked the guests on her behalf.
