GOLF NOTES

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS NEAR CLOSE RAWHITI’S WATERING SCHEME , [By THE GOOFI A. R. Blank, champion of the club of Canterbury on several occasions, will meet, in the final of the Christ-' church Golf Club’s championship tomorrow, a young player who has not previously advanced beyond the first round of the event. P. R. Godby, in reaching the final, has undoubtedly had the easier half of the draw, and his path has been further smoothed by the elimination of some who might have been expected to be his most difficult opponents in the section. The final will be played over 36 holes, and although Blank is expected to win, he will meet strong opposition from Godby, who has shown reasonably good form and strong powers of recovery in winning some very close matches. He was four down with seven holes to play, against I>. A. Dougall tij the first round, but won on the last green, and he gained a. win over C. A. Seymour at the nineteenth after being three down with five to play. Blank, after having to make a good recovery against I. M. Godby in the first round, has won his matches convincingly. He had less trouble than expected in beating P. H. N. Freeth in the semi-final, the latter failing to reproduce the brilliant form which enabled him to beat C. J. Ward, the title-holder. Russley and Avondale Bad weather has interfered with the championship events of several clubs this season. The Harewod events, however, have been completed, and some of the Russley and Avondale competitions have reached the final stages. There will be a new senior champion at Russley this year, for yesterday afternoon the title-holder, H. P. .Rennie was beaten by A. O. Wellwood, 3 and 1, in the semi-final. Wellwood had previously won'a very close match with D. B. L. Bowker, 1 up at the nineteenth. In the other half of the draw, L. E. Robinson will meet the winner of R. B. Dagger, a former club champion, and P. Gilmour. The B grade event is not far advanced, but the C grade now lies between H. A. Jarden and the winner of M. Gould and J. G. Malcolm. The finals are scheduled to be played on Sunday week, but it is possible that not all the events will be completed by that time.

At Avondale another champion of long experience. Jack Millard, will have to defend his title against a comparatively untried player, R. D. FrizzelL The latter is a young player of great promise. He started the season on an eight handicap and has since reduced this by three strokes. In the intermediate event L. Gordon will meet the winner of H. Dynibnd and C. S. Clark. H. Tillman has reached the final 6t the junior championship after three very hard matches and will meet the winner of R. E, McNish and A. H. Weir. An. Improving Player In the finals of the Richmond Hill senior and junior championships the winners of the respective grades were D. E, Climie and J. L. Gant, who were strong favourites from the outset Climie in particular has had a remarkably successful season in which he has reduced his handicap from 8 to 4. Always a good putter, it is in his driving that he has made the greatest improvement, and whereas he showed a tendency to slice his tee shots he now drives a long, straight ball, very often with just a trace of hook. That he can still make the ball fade at will he demonstrated at the long seventh hole in his match on Sunday. Deliberately taking advantage of a strong cross wind he chit the ball over the gully" skirting the left-hand side of the fairway to finish near the green. /

J. L. Gant, the winner of the junior title, also had a well-deserved win. He has an effortless way of hitting the ball, and in the last few weeks he has been showing form worthy of the holder of the junior championship. He has an ideal temperament-for the game and is never ruffled by the many vicissitudes that drive the average golfer to distraction. Playing in a scramble at Richmond Hill last Saturday afternoon, P. L. C. Bell-Syer did the third hole, "The Plateau" in one. Improvements at Rawhiti To those who have'visited Rawhiti, the municipal links at New Brighton, in this very wet winter the need for a watering scheme may not seem very apparent, for much inconvenience has been caused by pools of water lying for weeks at a time in the low-lying areas on the course. However, work on, the course in the past has been hindered during the summer by the difficulty of getting a good growth of grass in the very sandy soil, and the recent decision of the controlling authorities to install a fairway watering scheme will enable much more'rapid progress on a course which has been improved out of all knowledge in the last two or three years. Much developmental work remains to be done on the links, and as most of this involves the establishment of turf on extremely inhospitable sandhills a good supply of water will be a very great help to the groundsman and his staff. The laying of the pipes is now in progress and, it is expected that the work will be completed in three or four weeks. * Norton Francis Cn# The Norton Francis Cup match for club of four—the lowest net aggregate for Canadian foursomes on handicap—will be played at Shirley on October 18. Entries will close on Thursday, October 18. Hole-In-One at Rawhiti Playing at Rawfliti on Wednesday, Mrs A. McCallum holed in one at "The Pitch," 110 yards, when playing in a match with Mrs J. E. Gudgeon and Mrs A. Branch. This is the first time a woman member of the Rawhiti Club has holed in one on the municipal links. *
