The Minister for Public Works and for Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) left by the steamer express last night on his return to Wellington. Mr W. B. Cunningham, manager at Dunedin for the Union Steam Ship Company, arrived from the north yesterday morning on his return from California. He was accompanied by Mrs Cunningham,
Messrs E. J. Righton and T. B. Strong were passengers from Wellington by yesterday s steamer express.
Mr W. M. Luke arrived from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr J. O. Wilson, of the staff of the General Assembly Library, and formerly of the Wellington Public Library, has received advice that he was elected an associate of the Library Association (Great Britain) at its iast council meeting in June. Mr Wilson is the first man in New Zealand to have this honour, but two women have been previouslv elected. He is an old boy of Wellington College, where, m 1929, he won a Richardson scholarship, and n 1931 the Liverton history prize. Messrs J. L. Squire, J. C. Pawson, and J. Hobbs, of the Christchurch staff of the Union Steam Ship Company, who have been spending a holiday at Rarotonga, returned to Christchurch yesterday by the air liner Karoro.
Mr R. A. Young, who was recently married, was presented with a crystal set at a luncheon of the Business Men’s Club yesterday. Mr J. E. Duncan. M.Sc., who has been research assistant in che Massey Agricultural College veterinary laboratory since the beginning of this year, has been appointed to a position with the live stock division of the Department tof Agriculture. Mr Duncan is a graduate of the college.
A motion of sympathy with Mr A. E. McPhail in his recent bereavement was passed at the monthly meeting'of the Board of Directors of the Young Men’s Christian Association, held last evening.
Mr C. E. W. Steward, formerly of Fendalt<pn, gained first-class honours at the May examinations at Cambridge University, and was awarded a senior scholarship at Emmanuel College.
Mr F. F. M. Ferguson, manager in New Zealand for the Dunlop Rubber Company (New Zealand), Ltd., who will leave for England on the Niagara next month, will afterwards return to India, where he, had several years of service with the company’s organisation before coming to New Zealand. Mr Ferguson’s place in New Zealand will be taken by Mr Philip Proctor, who will shortly arrive from England, where he has recently been stationed, after several years’ service overseas.
