AN ARTIFICIAL HEART
Colonel Lindbergh’s
Invention
IMPORTANT AID TO RESEARCH (CSXIEO PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPTBIGHT.) (Received August 13, 9.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 12. The “Sun-Herald” news agency says that Colonel Charles Lindbergh, the famous aviator, will be recommended for the Nobel science prize for the invention of an artificial heart, of which the first European demonstration was given in Copenhagen yesterday, v The robot heart keeps the entire animal organs and their intensely complicated structures alive outside the body, thus making cancer and other research possible on living organs.
The machine, which is regarded as a most important aid.to medical research, was discovered through a bet made in 1931, when Professor Alexis Carrel, of New York, who was experimenting on an artificial heart, chided Colonel Lindbergh that he had not evolved anything to prolong life and allow people to profit by his air miracles.
Accepting the challenge, Colonel Lindbergh developed the mechanical heart, while Professor Carrel concentrated on the scientific side. After years of effort the pair have produced the miracle machine.
