THREE OPERATIONS AT SEA
SHIP’S CADET DIES
TWO STOKERS SUCCESSFULLY TREATED
(r»«SS ASSOCIATION TtLIQRAII.) AUCKLAND, August 13. Three cades requiring skilled surgical treatment occurred on board the Port Line steamer Port Darwin, which arrived from Port Kembla to-day, when the vessel was en route from England to" Australia. Two of the patients were operated on successfully at sea, but the third patient died while under the anaesthetic. The first case of severe illness occurred in the Atlantic Ocean when the vessel was proceeding to New York to load. A stoker developed acute appendicitis. He was operated on successfully by Dr. Lauri.-, of Sydney, who was acting as ship’s surgeon for the voyage. The doctor’s services were required a second time after the Port Darwin left New York and was in the Pacific Ocean. Another stok-'r, who was suffering from a severe internal complaint, had to be operated on by the doctor, and again the operation was successful. Nine days later, D. Haden, one of the ship’s cadets, became seriously ill with appendicitis and his case necessitated an immediate operation. He died when under the anaesthetic, and was buried at sea.
