ARBOR DAY TREE PLANTING

RANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL OBSERVANCE Postponed last Wednesday because of the visit of secondary school inspectors and again on Friday because of the Weather, Arbor Day was celebrated at Rangiora High School yesterday. During the morning. 200 trees, representative of pine, eucalyptus, and other families, were planted bv pupils on the school farm, and the significance of the day was explained in addresses by the principal (Mr J. E. Strachan) and the agricultural instructor (Mr D. A. Campbell). Following this, a tour was made of the school grounds and the various trees were identified. Supplementary planting will take place on the farm and on the school’s reserve in the Ashley river-bed for several v-eeks. Community Sing

A community sing in aid of the funds of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Rangiora Returned Soldiers’ Association was conducted by Mr A. Haigh on Monday evening. Individual items were: —Songs, Mesdames E. Horsley, A. Beatty, and A. Heald, Miss E. Miles, and Messrs S. V. Whitta and J. Currie; duets, Miss Miles and Mrs Beatty, Miss Miles and Mr Whitta, Miss M. Yates and Mrs Norton, and Masters F. McGrath and D. Small; recitation, Mrs H. Coey. Lodge Meetings

Visitors from the Trafalgar Lodge and the district president (Bro. W. Green) were present at a meeting of the Rangiora Druids’ Lodge on Monday evening. Bro. W. R. Robb, A.D., presided. Arrangements 'were made for the visit of the Ivy of Linwood Lodge next Monday. Sick pay amounting to £9 10s was passed for payment. After the meeting, the Royal Arch Chapter met. Bro. E. T. J. Stringer N.G., presided at a meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., on Monday evening. It was decided to ascertain if the Railway Department’s new railcar would be available for a visit to the Kaia Toa Lodge, Lyttelton. A claim for payment of a funeral allowance was approved, and a maternity allowance was passed for payment. Surprise Party

A surprise party was given to Mrs J. Small by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Rangiora Returned Soldiers’ Association on the occasion of her birthday. Community singing was led by Mrs G. Dennis, and items were given by Mesdames E. Withers and A. Beatty,

Misses E. Miles, and B v Small, and Master Douglas Small. Personal Mr L. C. Fincham will leave Rangiora at the end of this week to spend a month's holiday in North Otago. Mr and Mrs W. F Nicholson, of Rangiora, will sail for Sydney by the Wanganella, on August 27, and will spend a month’s holiday in Australia. Regent Theatre To-morrow evening another doublefeature programme, will be presented at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora— Zane Grey’s splendid Western romance, “The Rocky Mountain Mystery,” with Randolph Scott and Ann Sheridan in the lead, and “The Winning Ticket.” a comedy of the Irish sweepstakes, starring LeoCarillo and Louise Fazenda. On Saturday and Monday the brilliant screen success “The Scarlet Pimpernel," featuring Leslie Howard and Merle Oberori, will be shown. Seats may be reserved at Watson’s, telephone 202. WADDINGTON The Waddington brownie pack celebrated its first birthday by entertaining mothers and the Springfield guide company at a party. Brownie and guide games and competitions were enjoyed. A beautifully decorated cake was given by Mesdames Adams and Jebson. Girls’ Club Mi§s Thelma Searle presided over a meeting of the Sheffield Girls’ Club, which was held recently. An interesting demonstration on making toys was given by Mrs Anderson, Kirwee. The hostesses for the afternoon were Miss M. Humm and Miss V. Voice. HORORATA A meeting of the Hororata Women’s Hockey Club was held, with Mrs M. Thorne, jun., presiding. It was decided to hold the annual ball at the beginning of September. A committee was elected to carry out the necessary arrangements, with Miss M, Fuller as secretary. WAIAU RIFLE CLUB’S DANCE The members of the Miniature Rifle Club held a successful dance in the Public Hall recently, when there was a good attendance. Members of the Peninsula representative football team were also present. Music was played by the Waiau Band, extras being played by Misses B. Beggs, P. Forbes, and M. Oldman. Novelty dances were won by Miss M. Casserley and Mr D, Ross, Miss N. White and partner, and Miss G. Hadley and partner.
