JUBILEE DINNER

LINWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB CELEBRATES MEMBERS ATTEjPtO TilOM AFAR Nearly 200 people attended the jubilee dinner of the Linwood Football Club, at the Savoy Tea Rooms last evening, some of them making special trips from places as far removed as Auckland and Bluff- Mr S. Orchard was chairman. Many old-time members were present, prominent among them being Messrs F. and R. Ward, who w-r-i foundation members of the ciuo, Messrs C. Mason, J. Stapleton, H. and G. Ormandy, and H. Bowker, who joined in 1887, and Messrs B. Fanning. F. Newton (a 1905 All Black), S. Orchard, and E. J. Pegg, who joined soon afterwards. -. In proposing the toast of the Linwood Football Club. Dr; W. S. Seed, president of the Canterbury Rugby Union, recalled the palmy days of the club in the _ beginning of the century, when Linwood-won the-com-netition for five years running. Linwood had always shown, he sard, that it appreciated that the winning of competitions was not the chief- end of Rugby by playing the game as such, and devoting attention to the encour-, agement of the younger players. The toast list was as follows:—The, King, proposed by the chairman, Mr S. Orchard: “Absent Members,” proposed by Mr K. I. Armour; “The Linwood Football Club,” proposed«by Dr. W. S. Seed and responded to by Mr, S. Orchard: “The Canterbury Rugby •Union,” proposed by Mr E. J. Pegg and responded to by Messrs F. Evan? and W. Brittan; “Our Old Members proposed by Mr H. E. Davis and responded to by Mr F. Ward and representatives of decades; “Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr A. E. Phillips End responded to by Mr J. K. Moloney (president. Varsity Jubilee Committee), and other representatives; “Referees’ Association,’’ proposed by Mr W, J, Cowles and -responded to by Dr. D. McK. Dickson; “The Artists,” proposed by Mr R. O. Ball. Items were given by Messrs D. McGill, J. Lockhart, F. Woledge,-and W. Toomey. '
