WELLINGTON, August 10. “Arising out of the Australian tour, what are we going to do to improve the standard of our game?” asked Mr W. G. Bryce, at the fortnightly meeting of the council of the New Zealand Football Association this evening. “Obviously something must be done in view of the English tour.” During a discussion on ways to improve the game, it was suggested that the council should give a lead to club secretaries and associations by having a heart-to-heart talk with them and put forward concrete proposals, that the selectors in the main centres should be empowered to pick 30 men, and the association should spend £IOO to subsidise thfeir coaching; that lack of grounds was the trouble; and that more blackboard lectures were needed, with individual tuition. ’ It was decided that the concrete proposals to be sent to various associations should be considered at a meeting next Monday night The North Auckland Association advised that arrangements were being made with South Auckland for a Brown Shield challenge match. The Westland Association was granted permission to play Duller for tlm Peter Dawson Cup on August ii. Southland was granted permission to play Otago at Dunedin on August /o, and a return match at Invercargill on September 12.
