CONCERT AT CHEVIOT

ENTERTAINMENT BY MISS GRACE WILKINSON The residents of Cheviot were entertained at one of the best concerts ever held in the district recently, when Miss Grace Wilkinson, assisted by Mr E. J. Jamieson, who gave flute solos, and Mr Noel New Son, who. played the accompaniments, gave a delightful recital in the public hall to a large audience. • • . , ■; , Mr G. Struthers thanked Miss Wilkinson and those who assisted her for their splendid entertainment. He also wished her continued success. After the concert the friends of Mr T. H. Wilkinson, father of Miss Wilkinson, were entertained at supper. The Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes said the residents of the Cheviot county were greatly indebted to Miss Grace Wilkinson for her excellent entertainment. She was deserving of every success in h§r future engagements. Miss Wilkinson, who recently completed a contract with the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, has accepted a contract with the Australian Broadcasting Company, and expects to leave New Zealand next month. She will later go to England, where she expects to arrive in December. NEW LODGE ROOMS AT KAIAPOI

FORESTERS HOLD OPENING SOCIAL The Court Woodford Foresters’ Lodge, Kaiapoi, held a social last evening to mark the official opening of the new lodge rooms in Charles street. Members of the order were present from all parts of Canterbury, including Bro. W. J. Wraight, District Chief Ranger, and Bro. G. Brown, I.P.D.C.R. Bro. J. Storie, C.R., presided, and welcomed the visitors. Various speakers during the evening congratulated the lodge on the new hall and rooms. During the evening, a varied programme was given, including selections by the Kaiapoi orchestra. Personal Mr P. Kidd, of the Bank of New Zealand, Kaiapoi, has been' transferred to Timaru, and Mr M. PROPOSAL TO STOP PICNICS IN AREA The Templeton Domain Committee met in the library, Templeton, with Mr J. O’Grady (chairman) presiding. Mr D. Mackie was appointed treasurer for the ensuing year. The following notice of motion was given by Mr Mackie:—'“That- the resolutions olaced in the minute book by this committee permiting organised picnic to be held in the domain be rescinded.”

PRESENTATION AT GREENDALE

The Greendale branch of the Baptist Women’s Missionary Union met recently at the residence of the Rev. E. T. Jones, to bid good-bye to Mrs Lawford Lea, who is leaving the district to reside in the North Island. Mrs Taege, for the members, presented Mrs Lea with a box of stainless knives. HURUNUI RABBIT BOARD The monthly meeting of the Hurunui Rabbit Board was held at Wax-

kari recently. The South Island Rabbit Board Association wrote asking the board to appoint two delegates to represent it at a meeting to be held in Christchurch soon. Messrs J. Sloss (chairman), and G. J. H. Reid (treasurer) were appointed delegates to the meeting. In accordance with the notice of motion given by the treasurer, Mr G. J. H. Reid, Mr Reid moved as follows: “That a uniform rate of threesixteenths of one penny per head on sheep and fifteen-sixteenths of one penny a head on cattle be struck throughout the whole of the Hurunui Rabbit Board’s District on all persons whose names appear on the Stock Owners’ Roll of this board’s district for the 12 months beginning on April 1, 1936, and ending on March 31, 1937, the minimum rate payable by any stock owner to be the sum of seven shillings and sixpence, this rate to become due and payable in one sum on August 15, 1936.” The stock inspector, Mr R, W. Skinner, advised that his department had carried out poisoning operations in the wastelands and riverbeds, the result being as follows: —Oats poisoning (March to April):—Hurunui riverbed, 533 rabbits killed; Waitohi riverbed, 1324 rabbits killed; strychnine (May to July): Hurunui riverbed, 385 rabbits killed; Waitohi riverbed, 1211 rabbits killed. EAST EXRETON The monthly meeting of the Clark-ville-East Eyreton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held, with Mrs Frost presiding. Two junior members were chosen to attend the girls’ educational course in Christchurch next month. One new member was enrolled. A talk on gardening was given by Mr Balch. The monthly meeting of the Omihi Women’s Institute was held, with Mrs J. Sloss presiding. The motto for the month was:— “Start, some kind word on its travel; there is no knowing where the good it may do will stop.” Four new members were welcomed into the Women’s Institute. It was decided at the meeting that the institute take £2 worth of returned soldiers’ goods. During the afternoon Miss Dobson gave an interesting talk on her work in China. Bed Cross Society’s Dance The Cust-West Eyreton sub-branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society held a successful social and dance in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Tooms, who will leave Sheffield shortly to make their home in England, were the guests of honour at a surprise party given at their home by members of the Sheffield A.C.E. Drama Group. Mr A. Petrie expressed the regret which members of the drama group felt in losing Mr and Mrs Tooms. Mrs Tooms had been an energetic member, and Mr Tooms had been convener of the group since its formation. The guests of honour were presented with a nut bowl made from native wood and book of one act plays by Sir J. M. Barrie.

A succesful ball was held by the social committee of the St. John’s Church In the Town Hall, Little River. Demonstration dances were given by Miss Mavis White and Mr Cook, and humorous recitations by Mr - Brown. A lantern dance was won by Miss G. Cattermole and Mr R. Stewart (Akaroa), and a lucky spot dance by Mrs Seymour and Mr L. Hooker.
