Representative Basketball Because of two representative matches against the Christchurch Basketball Association in Christchurch on Saturday, the North Canterbury Association's competition matches will be postponed. held a carnival dance in the Hanmer Hall recently. There was a good attendance and the dance was a very enjoyable one. Mr W. Peters was master of ceremonies, and Ashby’s band provided the music. Seventy shooters took part In the competitions at the weekly shoot of the Hanmer Springs Miniature Rifle Club, the attendance being a record for the club. W. Jarden won the second round of the F. Greenall trophy. F. Sullivan won the lodge button and handicap events were won by A. J. Lahmert, P, McManaway, W. Jarden, and Miss J. Leech.

Women’s Division of Farmers’ Union Mrs W. Hanmer Atkinson presided at the bi-monthly meeting of the Hanmer Springs branch of the Womens Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. A large number of articles were handed in to be forwarded to the Nurse Maude Nursing Association. Mrs T. G. Robinson (Mount Palm) gave an instructive demonstration in the raising Of seedlings. Mrs E. Mansfield was announced as the winner of the yearly aggregate in the best bloom competition, Mrs G. O. Rutherford and Mrs E. Creed being equal, secondHostesses for the afternoon were Mrs A. H. SHRUBS PLANTED IN WOODEND DOMAIN The members of the Woodend-Wai-kuku branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union recently assembled in the Woodend Domain, the south-west corner of which had been prepared by the Domain Board for the planting of shrubs. There was a large assortment of native and flowering varieties of shrubs, and Mr W. Coles and Mr B. J. Archer, president and secretary of the' domain board, spent a busy time placing the plants in the best eivironment and assisting with the setting of them. Mothers’ Union At the August meeting of the Mothers’ Union at Woodend, Archdeacon A. C. Purchas (Rangiora) admitted two new members, Mrs Eder and Mrs P. Wilson, and gave an address. An adjournment was afterwards made to the Sunday school, where Mrs H. King conducted a short business session, at which an interesting letter was read from the link branch in Sandstead, England. The hostesses were Mrs J. Jelfs, Mrs I. Stalker, and Mrs T. Cutler.

OHOKA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The Ohoka Women’s institute met, with Mrs W. Richards presiding. A lecture on physhology was given by the Rev. L. C. Hotwood, Kaiapoi. The social half-hour was arranged by Mesdames J. Ward and G. Cottle. The roll-call was “old treasures,” A missing word competition was won by Mrs Armstrong. Competitions resulted as follows; —Best bloom: Mrs Heron 1, Mrs J. Ward 2, Mrs J. Mutry 3.
