MISS JACOBS’S FIFTH FINAL WOMEN’S SINGLES EVENt at Wimbledon BOROTRA INJURED IN DOUBLES (UNITED FBK3S ASSOCIATION—COPTBIGHT.) LONDON, July 2. Mis Helen Jacobs, the American champion. to-day entered the women’s singles final' at Wimbledon for the fifth time. She defeated Mile J. Jedzrejowska (Poland) and will meet Mme. H. Sperling,, the German player, who -now lives in Denmark. Miss Jacobs has never won the event, although she was a finalist in 1929, 1932 1934, and 1935. and a semi-finalist in 1931 and 1933. Mme. Sperling, then Fraulein Hilde Krahwinkel. was runnerup to Fraulein C. Aussem (Germany) in 1931. „ , ■ A Mme. Sperling entered the Anal after a soporific match of long baseline rallies. Mme. Mathieu was exhausted in the second set oy her opponents inartistic, but safe and tireless game- , . .. 0 There was more vitality about the other semi-final, Miss Jacobs breaking up the much improved Mile. Jedrzejowska s hard-driving game by chops, which the Polish player repeatedly oyer-hit. Australia’s last hope rested m the hands of McGrath and Sproule. The small centre-court crowd found nothing over which to enthuse in this doubles match against Allison and van Ryn, The Americans. without effort, won in straight sets. Sproule’s overhead work was very W Borotra and Brugnon comfortably defeated the American player, Cunningham, and the Japanese player. Itoh, but during the match, Borotra ran into the stopnetting and tore a thigh muscle. He continued in pain, and he will not decide until to-morrow morning whether he will continue In the event. Men’s Doubles Quarter-finals W. L. Allison and J. H. van Ryn (U.S.A.) beat V. B. McGrath and C. E. Sproule (Australia), 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. J. Borotra and J, Brugnon beat E. Itoh (Japan) and L. CUnningham (U.S.A.), 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Mixed Doubles Fourth Round A. M. Legeay and Mme. S. Henrotin (Francel beat J. H. van Ryn and Mrs van Ryn (U.S.A.), 6-1, 7-5. Quarter-final J. D. Budge and Mrs S. Eabyan (U.S.A.) beat F. Kukuljevic (Jugoslavia) and Countess de la Valdene (Spain), 6-0, 6-2.
