greymouth farmers* union [THE PRESS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH, June 14. The annual conference of the West Coast Provincial District of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at Greymouth, Mr P. J. O’Regan (Inangahua) presiding. The Mayor (Mr W Meldrum) welcomed the visiting delegates and opened the conference. Following a lengthy discussion on organising and the collection of subscriptions, it was decided that head office be asked to lay down a definite ruling as to the beginning of the financial year and to issue definite instructions to organisers about membership. It was decided to communicate with the Bulier branch suggesting that it affiliate with the West Coast to co-or-dinate their activities, and that, in the event of the suggestion being adopted, that the annual conference be held alternately in Greymouth and WestP °The balance-sheet, showing a credit of £23 Is 6d, was adopted, it being said that there was still £IOO to be received from head office. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted; —President, Mr P. J. O’Regan (re-elected); vice-president, Mr J Ryan; treasurer, Mr A. McDonnell; auditor, Mr H. G. Carter; general committee, Messrs Brown, McKay, Shannahan, Jellie, Clayton, Norton, Fisher, Carter, Baird, Delaney, McMahon, Yde, Jennings, Gouldings, and representatives from Kokatahi and Maruia to be appointed; emergency committee, Messrs Shannahan, Fisher, Carter, Clayton, president and vicepresident; delegate to Chamber of Commerce, Mr W. Norton; secretary, Mr J. Mulcare (re-elected); delegate to Dominion Conference, Mr J. Ryan; and substitute, Mr W. Fisher. It was decided that the secretary’s salary be increased from £25 to £SO per annum. A number of remits were passed, the principal of which were:—

Waite, and urge that the Dominion executive conform to the provincial system of having the retiring president an ex officio member of the executive for one year, but no longer. It was decided that representations be made to have stock inspectors notify the various branch secretaries when they were visiting in each district, so that farmers requiring their services would get in touch with them. C. Brown and admitted to the Grey Hospital, Funeral The funeral of Mrs Janet Sherlock took place at the Karoro cemetery. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church by the Rev. Dr. Harrison and the Rev. Father Gregory conducted the service at the graveside. Rugby Football Yesterday’s Rugby football matches were played in fine but cold weather. Results were: Greymouth representatives 65, Inangahua 3. Junior; Celtic 16. Star 0; Blaketcwn 11, United 5. Third grade: Star 36, Blaketown 6; Cobden 30, Technical 0. Fourth grade; United 17, Cobden 13. Hockey The West Coast Hockey Association’s fixtures yesterday resulted; Pacific 5, Wesley 2 ; Cobden 3, Mawhera 1. HOKITIKA AERO CLUB [THE PRESS Special Service.] HOKITIKA. June 13. The annual meeting of the Hokitika Aero Club was held last evening, with Mr H. T. Parry (president) presiding. In his report the president said that by the end of this year Hokitika would have an A class airport which would compare favourably with any-other in New Zealand. During the last six years the club had worked hard to further aviation and provide facilities in this district. The club had now finished its payment of £IOO to the Public Works Department towards the aerodrome construction. This year the club hoped to provide club rooms. The club thanked all subscribers to the McGregor Fund, for which £66 14s had been raised. The financial statement showed receipts for the year amounted to £93. the principal item being subscriptions £3B. The main item of expenditure was £SO to the Public Works Department.

The following officers were elected: •—Patron, Mr J. O’Brien, M.P.; president, Mr P. E. L. Renton; vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. J. Mclntosh, A. H. Lawn, J. S. Langford, Rev. Father O Gorman; club captain, Mr H. Lawn: secretary, Mr J. Houston; executive, Messrs H. T. Parry, J. D. Stuart H. B, Preston, D. B. Jellie, O. Templeton. A. Johnson, A. Wallace. Messrs P. Renton, H. Lawn, and J. Houston were appointed to represent the club on the council of the West Coast United Aero Club.

Completion of the new hangar and club rooms, before the inauguration of the Wellington-Hokitika air service next October, was considered. Magistrate’s Court

At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Messrs W. E. Richards and A. E. Benjamin, George M. Hamilton, aged 19 years, was charged with the theft of an overcoat, valued at £4, the property of A. C. Cookson, Christchurch. Defendant pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. He was convicted and admitted to probation for two years, the overcoat to be returned. Women’s Institute The monthly meeting of the Koiterangi branch of the Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs A. S. Havill, 20 members being present. The roll call, “a winter savoury,” was well responded to by members, some novel and tasty recipes being given. The competition for thrift articles was keenly contested, 24 articles being chosen as the two entries for the winter show. The competition for a jar of apple jelly was won by Mrs E. Madsen 1, Mrs A. S. Havill 2, and Mrs W. Havill and Miss Myra Smith equal 3. The Maori Pah branch of the Women’s Institute held a dance in Tokers Hall to celebrate the fourth birthday of the branch. Mr G. Mason acted as master of ceremonies. Messrs Cook and Ackers played the music. Mrs Hamilton cut the birthday cake, which was handed round by the junior members. During the evening an exhibition tap dance was given by Miss Walton. The lucky seat was won by Mrs A. Singer and Mr Kirwan. Mr Webb and partner were winners of the Monte Carlo dance. Rugby Football The South Westland and Westland representative teams met at Cass square, Hokitika, before a good attendance. Westland, the holders, retained the shield. The game was evenly contested until near the end, when Westland provided bright football to win by 13

points to 3. A junior game played as a curtain-raiser resulted; Excelsior 14, Arahura 3.

REEFTON NELSON LAND BOARD [THE PRESS Special Service.] REEFTON, June 14. The following Inangahua district business was transacted at the monthly meeting of the Nelson Land Board; — D. W. Thomson was granted on occupation license, at an annual rental of £1 15s, over section 10, block VIII, Burnett S.D., area eight acres, and 25 acres in part section 7. The Nelson Creek Sawmills, Ltd., was granted a timber-cutting license over 329 acres in section 11, block 1.. Inangahua S.D., and applicants asked to deposit the cost of appraisement, £lO 10s. The license of W. Nicholls for section. town of Blackspoint, area 11.3 perches, was cancelled. Social Afternoon The Reefton Women's Institute held a most successful social afternon in the St. Stephen’s Hall. Items were given by Mesdames Sharpe, Burnett, Cochrane, Misses F. McMillan, and J. Yellowlees. A sales table in charge of Mesdames Duff and Yellowlees was very successful. Cronadun Women’s Institute The monthly meeting of the Cronadun Women’s Institute was held in the Memorial Hall. Mrs T. Douglas was elected as a member. The sultana scone competition resulted in Mrs Gentle being first. Mrs Gibson second, Miss E. Wright third. A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of two of the members, the members standing in silence. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs T. McMahon and Miss McCormack. Persona! Visitors to the Southern Cross Hotel this week have been M.essrs Bannus (Christchurch), Crooks (Ashburton), and Harper (Timaru). Mrs M. Woods, of Christchurch, is on a visit to her mother, Mrs Hunter, , Manila.
