RELIEF OF DISTRESS

RANGIORA DEPOT NOT NEEDED In view of higher rates of pay and better conditions for the worker, members of the Rangiora Relief of Distress Committee agreed at the annual meeting yesterday afternoon that the opening of a relief depot in the town this winter was not necessary. There were cases of distress, but these could be dealt with privately. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided over an attendance of six. The chairman said that if the depot were opened the committee would have difficulty in stocking it. The credit balance would soon be spent. Mr H. M. Chappell said that there were indications that pensions would be reviewed soon, and any increases would further ease the position. . Details of the relief given last winter were outlined by the secretary (Mr C I. Jennings) in his annual report He acknowledged gifts of money and kind which made the work of the committee possible. Deep regret at the death of Mr W. A. Rowse, who had done very valuable work for people in poor circumstances, was recorded, and the committee was also grateful for the able assistance given by Mrs balance of £l4 10s 9d was shown in the balance-sheet compared with one of £3l Is lOd last year. Receipts totalled £224 13s 4d, including art union proceeds, £l5O, Lyttelton Harbour Board’s grant, £ 15, and community singing proceeds, £2l 6s 3d. Payments totalled £2OB 2s 3d, chief items being:—Groceries £B7 9s, clothing £44 16s lOd. fuel £lB 3s, boots £ll 14s, Christmas cheer £23, and aid for itinerant men and urgent cases £23 18s lid. , , Appreciation of the voluntary services of many helpers when the depot was opened last year was expressed. The efforts of social workers in the town were also praised. Personal Mr J. W. Macleod (president) will leave for Wellington on Tuesday to represent the Rangiora Returned Soldiers’ Association at the annual conlerence of the Dominion association. Mr C. L Jennings (secretary) was congratulated by the Rangiora Relief of Distress Committee at its annual meeting yesterday on the attainment of his golden wedding. Mr C, S, Ayers (Rangiora) has been re-elected to the Rangiora High School Board of Governors, as a representative of the Canterbury Education Board, and the Rev. R. Taylor (Sefton) has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr W. T. N. Keir, as the second representative of the board. Huston, of Christchurch, whQ also gave several recitations. Mrs Huston was thanked by Mrs A. Duffell. Devotions were led by Mrs McKechnie. Progressive Euchre Tournament Prizes were won by Mesdames A. G. Hunnibell, J. E. Dawson. P. O’Connor, and J. C. Banfield at a progressive euchre tournament held by the St. John’s Anglican Girls’ Club, Rangiora, on Wednesday evening. Improvement of Park To discuss raising money to msarove Dudley Park, a meeting was called in Rangiora last evening, but little interest was shown by either sports bodies or the general public. There was * an attendance of four, threequarters of an hour after the advertised time for the meeting. Most sports bodies using the park had appointed delegates to the meeting, and the Park Control Board had hoped to decide on a scheme which would provide a mower. It is probable that no further action will be taken. Regent Theatre A marshal fighting for peace and order on the Arizona frontier in the early ’eighties is the current characterisation undertaken by Richard Dix In his new starring vehicle. “Hie Arizonian,’’ which will be piesented tomorrow afternoon and evening at the i Regent Theatre, Rangiora. Deemed a “Cavalcade” of the West, “The Arizonian" is a romantic history of the early ’eighties. Dix as a courageous devotee of law and order in a country teeming with outlaws and gunmen protects his brother and the woman he loves, as well as the community from these enemies. In producing “The Arizonian,” Arizona history was consulted diligently. No incident of the thrilling record of the American frontier was allowed to go unnoticed, and, as a result, the .picture graphically protrays many incidents of that day. Well-known stars of the stage and screen are seen in support of Dix. who is said to give his finest performance since “Cimarron,” such as Margot Grahame. Preston Foster, and Louis Calhern. Intending patrons are advised to book their seats at Watson’s, telephone 202, in order to avoid the crash at the doors.

BANKS PENINSULA COLLIE DOG CLUB A meeting of the Banks Peninsula Collie Dog Club, was held with Mr S. Birdling presiding. Sir Bruce Stewart wrote giving the conditions of the Strathmore Cup which he presented to the club. Mr F. Birdling wrote enclosing £3 3s, and Mr John Anderson made a grant of £2 for the club funds. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile also wrote enclosing £1 Is for the prize fund. Accounts amounting to £99 10s 6d were passed for payment. The secretary reported that there would be a substantial credit balance.

BRANCH HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Kirwee sub-branch of the Red Cross Societv was held, with Mrs R. S. Roper presiding. Two new members were welcomed. The balance-sheet, which was considered satisfactory, was adopted. Officers elected were:—President Mrs R. S. Roper; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Selby and A, Anderson; honorary secretary, Mrs H. J. Devonshire: honorary treasurer. Mrs G. Batstone; committee. Mesdames Aitken. Burleigh. Kennedy, J. Anderson, E. H. Wilde. J. Coffey, F. Johnson, and Miss E. Seaton. Mr E. H. Wilde was elected honorary auditor. Residents Honoured A party was recently given to Mr and Mrs O. L. Simmance by members of the Kirwee Drama and Tennis Clubs and other friends. The evening was spent in playing table tennis, bridge, and dapcing. Prizes were won by Miss Joan Gillman and Mr I. Campbell. Songs were given by Miss P. Roper (Halkett) and Mr F. Lavender. A presentation was made to the guests, at whose departure much regret was expressed. After supper a dance was held. Mr A. Hart played the music. Personal Dr. Melba Ivory is spending the week-end at Greendale with the Rev. E. T. Jones and Mrs Jones. KAIAFOI Mr B. D. Gibson, of the Kaiapoi Post Office staff, who has been jransferred to Invercqrgill, left for the south : to-day.

MOUNT GREY DOWNS There was a large attendance at the card party and dance held in the Mount Grey Downs Schoolroom. Dancing was enjoyed, the music being played by JJrs J. Vallance. * WADDINGTON A friendly billiards match between Kimberley and Waddington wds played at the home of Mr and Mrs W. J. Jenkins, “Fair View,” recently. Waddington beat Kimberley by 839 to 807. Personal Mr E. D. Rodgers, who is on his annual leave, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs W. E. Rodgers, “Awakoponga.” Loyal Malvern Lodge The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Malvern Lpdge, No. 6247, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall recently. The Noble Grand Bro. C. M. King, presided. One candidate was proposed for membership, Bro. E. W. Rodgers, P.G. was instructed to convey fraternal greetings from the Loyal Malvern Lodge, 'to any lodge that he might attend while touring the North Island, After the close of the meeting the members, their wives, and friends were entertained at a very enjoyable card evening. DUNSANDEL The Dunsandel branches of the Farmers’ Union and Young Farmers’ Club held a combined meeting in the Dunsandel Hall. Mr Russeli Barnett presided, and a visit was received from Mr McGillivray, field superintendent of the Agriculture Department Mr McGillivray gave an interesting and instructive lecture on top-dressing, and the results of experiments, and illustrated this with lantern slides. Women’s Division of Farmers’ Union The annual social and dance, arranged by the Dunsandel branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, was held recently. The stage was decorated tastefully with bowls of chrysanthemums. Mrs F. Chamberlain, president, welcomed the visitors, and all the large audience of friends from the district. Mrs Gilbert presented bouquets to Mrs Chamberlain and Miss Aldridge, secretary. At the conclusion of the concert, supper was served by members of the Dunsandel branch of the Wofnen’s Division of the Farmers’ Unipn. Mrs Chamberlain thanked those who had helped to make the evening a success. For the dancing which followed, Messrs D. Scott, T. Aldridge, and A. Walker acted as masters of ceremonies. Music was played by the New Collegians Band, with extras by Mr B. D. Watson. HORNB Y-ISLIN GTON The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held with Mrs Drak? presiding. An appeal from the Christchurch branch of the Red Cross Society was received asking for help. It was decided to help by making garments. A proposal that the institute should join the drama circle was carried unanimously. > It was decided not to send a delegate to the federation meeting at Dunedin in July. Arrangements were made for holding the fourth birthday party in Islington Hall on August 7. A letter was read from the president of the link in England, Hornby, near Lancaster. Mrs Rugg and Mrs Drake were appointed delegates to attend group meetings. The results of the competitions were as follows; —Hot water bottle cover; Mrs Lawson 1, Mrs Hepburn 2. Article from one yard of Britway; Mrs Kingsford 1, Mrs Hepburn 2. Toffee: Mrs Hepburn 1 and 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Rowe, Mackie, and Miss H. Mackie. Mrs J. Workers’ Educational Association The first meeting to be held this year of the Akaroa branch of the Workers’ Educational Association was held recently. Miss Craig was leader, and the three-act play, “Success," by A, A. Milne, was read. Personal Mr J. McKay, jun., Bruce Hotel, Akaroa, is visiting Auckland.
