BLENHEIM NEWS

An enjoyable parly was held at the Marlborough Women’s Club last Friday night, to celebrate the thirteenth birthday of the club. The reception room was decorated with large bowls of chrysanthemums, and the supper table was gay with mixed flowers and a birthday cake with 13 candles occupied the centre of the table. Mrs L. L. T. Bush, the president, who received the members, wore a black georgette frock with sequin trimmings. Songs were sung by Mrs P. J. Fogarty and Miss M. Goodson. Two monologues were given by Mrs G. M. Spence and two sketches were given by Mrs Spence, Misses Nedra and Mignon MacDonald, Margaret Churchward, Cara Evatt, M. Webb, and Marjory Coulter. Mrs Bush proposed the health of the club. Those present were Mesdames L. T. Bush, A. C. Fell. S. T. Evatt, G. M, Spence. P. J. Fogarty, P. R. Wilkinson, B. Green, P. M° nro - J- Balfour, J J. McLeod, J. J. White. J. J. Corry, A. A. Edwards, E. G. Blick, T. Renwick, B. Clouston, E. W. Rose, W. K. Gill. A Cornelius (Wellington), E. F. J Grigg, W. T. Churchward, G. K. Stocker and C. Mac Donald. Misses M. Bell, Mac Donald (2), Zoe Clouston, Cara Evatt. D. Blick, M. Churchward, Weld. M. Goodson (Wellington), P. Coulter, Teschemaker, A. Neville, M. Webb (Wellington), and M. Coulter. Mr§ Wadworth and Miss M. Wadworth (Christchurch) are staying with Mr and Mrs J. H. Wadworth (Brancott). . Miss Cora Wood is visiting Australia. Mrs H. E. Burden has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs A. Cornelius, who has been spending some weeks with her mother, Mrs J. J. Corry, has returned to Wellington. Miss Marguerite Webb, who has been staying with Mrs G. M. Spence, has returned to Wellington.

WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION RICCARTON BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Riccarton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union Mrs E. W. Barrel! presided over an attendance of 21 members. The meeting, led by Mrs Millar, was preceded by a prayer meeting for world peace. Arrangements were made for holding a peace meeting on June 11 in St. James’ Sunday school hall. Mr Johnston will be the speaker, and a peace play will be presented by Miss Winifred Smith.

Mrs Pitt’s resignation was received with regret, and she was thanked for a donation to the funds. Stocking tops, made into children’s garments for the mission box were handed in by Mrs Campion. Mrs Watson was appointed superintendent of the prison department and Mental Hospital visitor, in place of Mrs Swallow, who had resigned. The president reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made for officials of the union to visit the Mental Hospital. The Band of Hope helpers for June will be Mesdames White and Gainsford.

Mrs White was appointed sick visitor for the month of June. It was resolved to hold the next district convention in September at Riccarton, and arrangements were made for holding a home meeting at the home of the president at the end of June.. Mrs Doig gave an interesting talk on the life of James Matthew Barrie. Mesdames Hitt and Hartley Smith served afternoon tea. DANCE AT ST. FAITH’S The fourth of a series of monthly dances organised by St. Faith’s Young Men’s Club was held in the Parish Hall, New Brighton, last evening. The hall had been artistically decorated in the club colours, red and white, and greenery. The committee responsible for the arrangements was: Messrs B. W. Rice, P. Warner, S. Wroth, C. G. Seaward, W. R. Fitchett, F. Hobbs, and G. Thompson. The supper arrangements were in the hands of Mesdames C. Cattermole, M. Napper, and W. H. Fitchett.

The music was played by Mjss Mavis Holden’s orchestra, and Messrs Warner and Hobbs were joint masters of ceremonies.

A Monte Carlo dance was won by Misses Gloria White and Margaret Coddington. Among those present were Mr and Mrs F. Holden, Mesdames C. Cattermole, W. H. Fitchett, M.
