UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

WORK OF RETURNED SOLDIERS’ EXECUTIVE Unemployment registrations totalling 513 were received by the employment officer of the Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association, for the fortnight ended on Saturday, according to a report submitted to the executive at its meeting last evening. These included eight new registrations, and 64 at New Brighton. Work was found for 172 men for 222 i days, the cost of subsidy being £B7 17s 3d. Work for 22 days was found without subsidy. Men placed on subsidised work included 30 placed on disabled soldiers’ gardens, 14 employed at the club premises, and 14 employed at New Brighton.

The general assistance committee reported that 139 applications had been received during the fortnight ended on Saturday. Of these two had been declined, and three deferred. The applications granted included 89 for groceries, 24 for coal, and 21 miscellaneous orders.
