OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, May 25. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m„ and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: —
Light to moderate southerly winds. Weather mainly fair to fine, but cloudy at times on the coast, with possibly some isolated light showers or misty rain. Temperatures cold, with some sharp frosts. Seas moderate, with a considerable southerly swell.
The following is the Dominion forecast: —
Some scattered rains in the northern half of the North Island, with some heavy falls in the far north. Light showers probable also at isolated places on the east coast south of East Cape. Otherwise fair to fine and cold. An intense anticyclone is centred east of Tasmania and extends on to New Zealand; but pressure is low to the southeast, and a series of depressions continues to pass to the north of the Dominion.
Winds—Southerly to south-easterly: moderate mainly, but freshening at times about and north of Cook Strait, and reaching gale force at places in the northern and north-eastern portions of the North Island. Seas (New Zealand waters)— High on the east coast of the Auckland Peninsula, and rough elsewhere north of East Cape, and also offshore north of Cape Egmont; elsewhere moderate, but with a considerable southerly swell south of East Cape. Eastern Tasman—Easterly to south-easterly winds, strong in the northen portion with rough seas: rrtoderate in the southern portion with moderate seas.
CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER
Yesterday afternoon was fine and sunny in Christchurch, although it was cold in the shade. The latter part of the morning was also sunny. About 11 o’clock last evening a light drizzling rain set in from the south-west. At 1 o’clock this morning, the weather was cloudy and rain was falling. The wind was from the south-west. The temperature was 47 degrees. The barometer, rising slowly, registered 30.25 inches. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—Yesterday there was fine weather, with a moderate south-east wind. The barometer was steady at 30.00 m all day. Wellington—There was a fog over the city in the early morning, and the weather was rather cloudy. In the afternoon the sun shone; but a cold south-easterly breeze blew. The minimum temperature on Sunday night was 39.1 degrees; the mr ;mum yesterday was 53.1 degrees. Dunedin —There was a slight breeze from the south-west yesterday, and the sky was overcast.
