CANTERBURY UNION'S

DECISION

No Rugby football player will be selected lor any Canterbury representative team in future unless he is a financial member of his own club. This decision was reached at a meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union Executive last evening. Mr E. V. Phillips introduced the motion. "We have had players representing Canterbury who are not financial with their own clubs," he said. I don't think it is right." Mr W. Britten seconded the motion. Mr A. I. Cottrell: We have to consider the unemployed. The chairman (Dr. W. S. Seed): They are provided for. They are covered already. "If a player who is unfinancial with his club gets hurt, he gets no assistance," said Mr Britten, "but if he is playing for Canterbury he gets all the benefits for his injury. We must not lose sight of that." Asked if his motion was to apply to all representative teams, Mr Phillips said it was assumed that the union had only one representative team, the first-grade team. Insurance Benefits Mr D. I. Macdonald said that if the motion applied at all it should apply to all representative teams, to which Mr Phillips agreed. Mr J. T. Burrows moved as an amendment that a player representing Canterbury while unfinancial in his club should receive no insurance if he were injured. He thought this would be a sufficient threat, as the chances of injury in representative football were well known to players. "If a man were hurt and got no assistance from the union," said Mr H. Davis, "there would be such a noise that we would never live it down." The amendment was lost and the motion was carried. Addition to Rules

The decision, was reached after a discussion on an addition to the Rugby rules approved by the New Zealand Rugby Union. The resolution passed by the New Zealand Union, dealing with the transfer of players, is as follows: — "That a new section headed 'Transfer of players,' be incorporated in the rules of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union after rule 42, and numbered 42a. Such rule to read as follows: 'Any player transferring his bona fide residence from one union to another shall not be eligible to play under the jurisdiction of the latter union until such time as he produces a clearance from the club for which lie last played, and such clearance shall not be unnecessarily withheld."

MATCHES AGAINST AUSTRALIANS

CANTERBURY GAME

ACCEPTED

DOMINION COUNCIL CRITICISED FOR NOT ALLOWING TEST

"It is quite evident that the Canterbury Association has not the sympathy of "the New Zealand Council. We should get the centre shifted," said Mr J. E. Jones (president), at a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Football Association last evening in expressing dissatisfaction with the action of the New Zealand Association in not allowing Christchurch a test against the Australian visitors. It was decided, however, to accept- the Canterbury match. A letter was received from the New Zealand Football Association stating that the application for a test had been fully discussed at a meeting of the association. In the past, the letter reported, it had been the practice to play only three tests against a visiting Australian team and it would be difficult to obtain a fully representative team for the four tests, as well as making the tour much harder for the Australian visitors. Besides, consideration would have to be given to the expenses involved in the playing of the extra test. Also, a request for a decrease of a week in the itinerary from the Australian authorities had been granted. A further decrease of a week had now been asked for.

Mr Jones questioned if. because of the feeling against the New Zealand Association, the match between Canterbury and the Australians should be refused.

Mr E. Fielding: Will we receive any gate-money from it?

Mr Jones:

Mr C. E. Keys said that the Canterbury Association would receive a proportion of the gate money at English Eark. A Bad Thinr Mr R. Wood: It would be a bad thing if we did not accept the match. It would do no good refusing it; in fact it would do more harm than good. We should take it now that we have got it. There are many people looking forward to it, and it would not be fair to the players to cancel the match. Mr J. Lindley supported Mr Wood. The match would do a lot of good, he said, and the association would probably benefit financially. Mr J. G. Parry moved that the association accept the match. Although the association had been slighted by the omission of a test in Christchurc]} the general public wished for a match with, the Visitors, The motion was cari ried.

Mr Jones, after the motion was carried, said that it was quite evident that the Canterbury centre was not getting the sympathy of the Dominion association. The centre should be shifted. It had outlived its usefulness. A move should be made to have it moved elsewhere. This suggestion was not discussed. The Canterbury game will be on June 27.

BURY ASSOCIATION
