OBITUARY
MR. W. H. STEWART Mr William Henry Stewart, a wellknown resident of Mastertcn, and formerly well known in the police force in Wellington, has died at the age of 77 years. Mr Stewart, who was born in Tasmania, had a varied experience, first as a seafarer and then as a mounted policeman in Tasmania in the days of gold digging in that state. He was also at that time an accomplished athlete. Coming to New Zealand, Mr Stewart joined the police force, subsequently being appointed court orderly at the Supreme Court, Wellington, a position he filled from IDI6 to 1922. MR E. A. GUMBLEY The death has occurred of Mr, Ernest Arthur Gumbley, at Wau, New Guinea. Mr Gumbley was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Gumbley ,of Wanganui, whore he was educated. He represented Wanganui on the Rugby field on several occasions. Some years ago Mr Gumbley held the position of borough engineer at Tauranga. and later was engineer to the Lower Hutt County Council. At one "time he was engineer in charge of the Invercargill municipality. Some time ago Mr Gumbley went to Australia. He returned to New Zealand, and eventually went to New Guinea. He is survived by his widow and seven children.
