EASTER HOLIDAY IN BRITAIN
BAD WEATHER KEEPS CROWDS UNDER COVER (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, April 14.
During the Bank holidays, snow sleet, and heavy rain' fell in London and in many parts of the country.
A comparison of the attendance yesterday and on Easter Monday a year ago at the places of interest in London illustrates the effect of the inclement weather. Only 56.000 people visited the Zoological Gardens, Regent's Park, and Whipsnade Zoo, compared with 95,000 last year, whereas the numbers passing into the British Museum and the museums in South Kensington were 71,000 against 58,000 in 1935. The unfavourable weather reduced the number of vehicles on the roads and generally relieved the worst anticipated congestion of the transport services, but a collision last, evening just outside Waterloo Station, between Southern Railway electric and steam trains, and the partial derailment of a train on the London North-Eastern line, a few miles from Liverpool street, neither of which resulted in casualties, disorganised the homecoming holiday traffic on those lines.
A popular holiday expedition for those within reach was a visit to Southampton to see the liner Queen Mary lying at her berth in the ocean dock, from which she will sail tomorrow for her official trials in the Firth of Clyde. The Berengaria, which was docked alongside, was used as a grandstand by more than 22,000 persons.
