ATHLETICS

KAIKOURA MEETING GOOD FINISHES IN ALL EVENTS

The Easter meeting of the Kaikoura Athletic and Cycling Club was held on the Takahanga Domain in fine but dull weather. There was a good attendance of the public, including many visitors, and the cycling and running tracks were in good order. The various sections of the programme were well supported, competitors frdm outside the district competing, in all classes, and the events provided excellent finishes. The cycling events provided keen racing, and C. Wareham (Kaikoura) was very successful in winning the main events, the two-mile cycle handicap, also the mile and mile and a half handicaps. Mugford (Christchurch) won the three-mile cycle handicap. The main running event, the 135 yards Sheffield handicap, was won in good style by L. A. Bench (Christchurch) from a good field. The bushmen's events were keenly contested, as usual, and some good chopping was seen. The principal event, the underhand chop, was won by a maiden, competitor. I. Smith, who chopped in great form and won fairly easily. In this event the scratch man, C. Pablecheque, put up a great performance in winning the first heat, after giving away a handicap of 35 seconds on a 14-inch log, and did remarkably well in securing second place in the final. The meeting was ably conducted. Musical items were played during the afternoon by Whitelaw's orchestra (Christchunrch).
