TOWNSEND PLAN ENQUIRY
INTERNAL DISSENSION IN
ORGANISATION
(Received March 31, 8.45 p.m.)
WASHINGTON, March 30,
It was disclosed at the Congressional investigation to-day that whereas in the last quarter of 1935 the income of the Townsend Plannamely, Old Age Revolving Pensions, Ltd.—from the 10 cents a month members' dues, was 350 000 dollars, it shrank to 180,000 dollars in the next quarter. Internal dissension among leaders of the movement, over basic policies, was also considered to have seriously affected the standing of the organisation. The most recent resignation was that Mr John S. McGroarty, who was the organisation's spokesman in Congress. Mr McGroarty alleged that Dr. Townsend had deserted his original plan and was now advocating an entirely different scheme which he was unable to support. [The United States enquiry into the Townsend Plan has continued for some days. The enquiry is into the finances of the movement, which is intended to secure support for Dr. Townsend's scheme for providing a pension of 200 dollars a month to all persons of more than 60 years of age.]
