ATHLETICS

BOOT BREAKS ANOTHER RECORD

UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT

TRIALS

Some determination and recordbreaking invaded the picnic atmosphere of the University athletic trials and championships on the Christ’s College ground on Saturday afternoon. The big attraction for the day was the appearance of V. P. Boot, one of the Canterbury Olympic Games nominees, who made a successful attempt on the New Zealand 1000 yards record. Boot covered the distance in 2min 14 3-ssec, taking three-fifths of a second off the former best New Zealander’s performance, recorded by the Canterbury athlete, T. G. Broadway, and equalled by the British runner, J. V. Powell, when he was here last season.

The earlier part of the afternoon was fine and warm, and the track was in fair order, but Boot was a tired man. Only four days earlier he had run the half-mile in international time on a heavy track at Lancaster Park, and it was obvious that this had not been his only running during the week. He made hard work of every yard of his 1000 yards. Had he attempted the same distance at the top of his form he might quite easily have made the sensational time officials were hoping for.

Broadway, the former recordholder, started from scratch with Boot and played a big part in setting up the new figure. He made a hot pace over two of the two and a half laps. It seemed at one stage as if it was going to be too fast for Boot, but the New Zealand champion moved away at a great pace down the back straight on the final lap, as he has done iq nearly every race he has run. He came up to the tape with a little less dash than on Tuesday night and just managed to break the required 2min 15sec. It was a wonderful performance breakingtwo' New Zealand records within a week. . Small fields contested the trial events, but there were some interesting performances. A. T. Anderson, the quarter-mile hurdler, ran a fast quarter-mile on the fiat in 50 4-ssec, a new College record. J. D. Carmichael, Canterbury 220 yards champion, ran better than he has done for some time, winning both sprints easily in times that were fairly goo„d, running into the wind. K. W. Robinson covered throe miles in 15min 36 4-ssec.

OTAGO INTERFACULTY SPORTS

STRONG BREEZE HELPS PERFORMANCES

(PKKS3 AS3OCI4TIOIT TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, March 29. The annual interfaculty sports of the Otago University College wore held on Saturday. The weather was unsettled and during part of the afternoon a strong breeze aided performances. In the field events two records were broken, both by R. D. Pilling. In the hop, step and jump he covered 45ft 6£in, the previous record of 44ft 2in being set in 1932, Ijy R. O. Johnson. In the long jump he covered 21ft 6in, four inches better than D. R. L. Stevenson’s record, established 10 years ago. A previous jump of 21ft 10£ in was disallowed because of the wind. J. Opie, who was second in the long jump with 21ft 4in, also boat the record. In the 100 yards H. A, Steele won in 10 l-ssec, which is equal to the existing record, but this performance will not be officially recognised. W. D. Borrie was the outstanding hurdler, winning the 220 yards and 440 yards, and being third in the 120 yards.
