WASTE OIL FROM MOTORSHIPS
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —As the world’s shipping is grad ually becoming oil driven, the problerr arises what are we going to do abou the waste oil from motor ships. If th< problem is not attended to the resul will be the ultimate destruction of th< world’s coastal fisheries, which woul< be a very serious thing for all na tions. As I am not a scientist I hop* you will pardon my presumption ii putting my spoke in. So may I asl
you would it be too much to ask thi various nations that are concerned, t( call upon all oil-driven vessels ti equip their ships with waste oil tank of sufficient capacity to bring theis oil into the various ports, where i could be profitably handled. All citie of any size have destructors, where th< oil could be used as fuel to burn thi garbage; or better still, if it could firs be distilled and the spirit used as : spray for orchards and gardens, i might be better than the various poisbi sprays now in use. I think it migh then be handled at a profit, and ; nuisance turned to profitable account —Yours, etc.. F. GREAD. Ataahua, March 23, 1936.
