LINWOOD AVENUE SCHOOL
SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL The concluding sessions of the Linwood Avenue School carnival on Saturday afternoon and evening were enthusiastically supported by a big crowd of people in carnival mood. The stalls were finally emptied of goods, and sideshows had numerous patrons, and even the heavy shower during the afternoon failed to affect the success of the day. Because of pressure of duties in Wellington, the Hon, D. G. Sullivan wu unable to attend, and in a telegraph message he congratulated the school committee upon its forward move. In bis stead he appointed Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., to officiate at the official opening. The chairman of the school committee (Mr T. Nuttall) welcomed Mr and *£ra McCombs, also Messrs C. S. fhompson (chairman), J. J. Hurley, S. 3aird, and W. T. Langley of the Canerbury Education Board. He said that the occasion was unique in the life of the school, lor after many years of anticipation the assembly hall was now in the course of construction. Special mention was made of the tremendous effort made by the women and many others who had worked hard, and also the headmaster (Mr McCormick) and Mrs McCormick; and the teaching staff. Mr McCombs stated that Mr Sullivan had personally asked him to convey his best wishes, and added that the residents of Llnwood were fortunate in having such an up-to-date school in their midst. Their support of the carnival showed the keen interest they had in the school. Mr C. S. Thompson (chairman of the Education Board) briefly congratulated the district upon its useful addition to the school, and said that the board fully recognised the valuable work voluntarily undertaken by School committee...
