The Minister for Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, arrived from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. To-day he will leave by motor-car on a tour of Otago and Southland. He is accompanied by Mr J. Wood, acting-engineer to the Public Works Department. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates left Auckland for Wellington last evening. The Hon. D. Buddo, M.L.C.. arrived from the north on Saturday morning. Mr G. T. Weston has been appointed a member of the Leithfield Domain Board, to fill the position made vacant by the increase in the number of members from seven to eight, according to a notice in the Gazette. The Rev. F. A, Parry, who has just resigned from the oversight of the Hamilton Baptist Church to undertake a church extension campaign on the West Coast of the South Island, is spending a few weeks in Lower Hutt. Mr G. H. Bourne, who is to succeed Mr J. E. Astill as manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of New South Wales, arrived by Saturday morning’s steamer express, accompanied by Mrs Bourne and family. They are guests at Warwick House. Mr Leo Cherniavsky, the famous violinist, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday morning and is a guest at Warner’s Hotel. Mr Cherniavsky is under contract to the New Zealand Broadcasting Board and will be in the city for about a week. He will leave New Zealand on April 6, to undertake a concert tour of South America.
Dr. R. Asmis, Consul-General for Germany in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Sea Islands, whose headquarters are in Sydney, arrived by the Rangitata from England on Saturday. Dr. Asmis has been on leave in Germany and has been away eight months. He will spend a short time in Wellington before leaving for Sydney. The Hon. T. Brindle, M.L.C., was congratulated on behalf of the Wellington City Council last week by the Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) on his appointment to the Legislative Council. “We all know the long period of work and the time he has devoted to public affairs,” said Mr Hislop, “and we feel that his appointment to the Legislative Council is going to be helpful to the country.” Mr G. Felix Harris, London director of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., and Federal Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., arrived in Wellington last week and is returning to London by the Rangitata, sailing on April 9. He proposes to make a tour of the South Island in the meantime. Mr George C. Seers, who has recently been appointed managing, director of General Motors, New Zealand, Ltd., has been connected with the firm for 17 fyears, particularly in England. British India, and the East Indies. He was managing director at Bombay for four years and also for three years was managing director for Batavia. Mr Seers, who was born in London and educated in England, served in the war from August, 1914, to July, 1919.
