British Art Exhibition

Since three other centres in the Dominion have arranged for the exhibition of a collection of representative paintings from the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery, London, it will be unfortunate if Christchurch ignores this opportunity of seeing pictures from these great galleries. The cost of the exhibition is set at approximately £3OO, and at this low figure there should be no difficulty in inducing the public to support the exhibition sufficiently to pay expenses. The range of the exhibition is from the time of Hogarth to the present day, and from the educational standpoint it is to be. hoped that there is slender representation of part of the. Victorian period to make room for a wider selection of the painting that has been done more recently. In many ways Victorian years were the dullest in British art, but in this century there has been a revival of which little enough is known outside England. The British loan exhibition of a year or two ago was, of course, serviceable in an educational way, but there is still much ground to be covered; The latest collection, however, has been chosen by the governing director of the Tate Gallery, a fact giving reasonable guarantee that it will be picked with the object of giving proper emphasis to the various movements represented. In the meantime it is essential that the Canterbury Society of Arts, as well as other lovers of art in Christchurfch, should see that the pictures are shown in this city.
