FIRE DESTROYS HOUSE AT KAKAHU DOG AROUSES OCCUPANT Fire totally destroyed a sevenroomed house at Kakahu, owned an occupied by. Mr J. Goodeye, a man, soon alter one o’clock on trw morning. Nothing was saved from the house. , The barking of his dbg awoke Mr Goodeve, who was the only occupant, and he discovered the fire had a strong hold and nothing could be done to save the house and its contents. The near est neighbour lived a quarter of a mue aV The building was insured for £550 with the Royal Insurance Company, but Mr Goodeve will be a fairly heavy loser because he had no cover on ms furniture. An Unusual Accident An unusual accident occurred on the Main North road, Geraldine, near Mr J. Ashby’s, when a dog threw a cyclist to the ground and punctured his front tyre with its teeth. Scully was droving a mob of shen) along the road north of Geraldine, bn the approach of a motor-car, his dog went to head the sheep off tb allow u to pass, but as the dog is blind in one eye, it did not notice a bicvcle, ridden by Mr J. Hendry, and it put its feet through the front spokes or the cycle wneei, bringing the cycle ana rider to the ground on top of itseix. In its struggles to regain its freedom, the dog bit the front tyre of the cycle and punctured it. Personal Mr and Mrs E, Grayburn CCainbridge) and Mrs Charters (New Plymouth), who have been visiting Geraldine for the diamond wedding of Mr and Mrs H. W. Grayburn. iett £or the north on Saturday. Miss Evelyn Pierce, Sercombe s road, Geraldine, has left to spend a holiday in Cambridge. . ~ . . Miss Sylvia Vincent (Ashburton) was a visitor to Geraldine at the week-end. Mr and Mrs D. J. Callanan (Christchurch) visited Geraldine at the weekend. ~A . Swimming Committee Meets At a meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Swimming Club, Mr J. £). McKechnie presided. Mr W. McCullough was appointed secretary in place of Mr J. Webb and Mr D. Willcocks was appointed treasurer. „ . „ . , The Royal Life Saving Society (Christchurch) wrote intimating that they would be pleased to help in every direction with the tuition of life saving, and would be prepared to send an instructor to Geraldine to teach the local swimmers. It was decided to hold the visit over until the weather was more favourable. Arrangements for the final weekly swim, to be held on a Saturday afternoon, were left in the hands of Messrs F. Morgan, and J. Stevenson. The obtaining of a new diving-board was discussed, and it was left in the hands of the president to make enquiries. , . , Mr E. Fairhall was elected a new member. Golf Season Opens There was a large attendance of members and visitors at the opening of tne season at the Geraldine District Golf Club’s Denfield links on Saturday afternoon. Visitors were present representing the Glen-iti, Pleasant Point, and Peel Forest Homestead Clubs. The north-westeny wind made play unpleasant, but the scores were very good considering the windy conditions. Before officially declaring tne season open, tne president (Mr G. N. Feilden) welcomed those present and expressed the hope that they would have an enjoyable game. The course-wa&2« good order. The greens were gredtly improved, having been made larger, and they are all carrying a good growth of grass. With the new bunkers, play would be much more interesting. He hoped that members would assist the club in every way during the coming season, which promised to be a very successful one.
Mr Feilden asked the club secretary (Mr D. J, Lack) to accept for the club a flag in the club colours, and bearing the letters “G.D.G.C.” as a gift from Mrs Feilden and himself. The secretary expressed the members’ thanks to Mr and Mrs Feilden for their gift which was hoisted on the club’s flagpole by Mrs Feilden. At the conclusion of the afternoon’s play, trophies were handed to the winners of the mixed foursome, Mr and Mrs C. W. Steele (Timaru), and to the runners-up, Mrs W. McClure (Geraldine), and Mr R, G. It has received the highest commendation wherever it has been shown. Out of the shadows of secrecy, “G Men” is a page from recent history, and tells how America tackled the gangster problem. The cast is excellent and includes James Cagnev, Margaret Lindsay, and Ann Dvorak. The programme includes variety supports. SEADOWN The monthly meeting of the Seadown School Committee was held recently; Mr R. J. Edgar presiding. The report showed that there had been e good attendance for the last month. The chairman reported that the new headmaster, Mr Ward, would take up his' position on April 1. Personal Miss H. Dale (Albury) has returned home after spending a pleasant holiday at Seadown. ■ Weather ■ In the last nine days more than four inches oZ rain have' fallen. Threshing has begun, again, but the ground is still very soft.
TEMUKA With only one more series of races to be held, the points for the trophies lor the season gained by the members of the Temuka Amateur Swimming Club are:—Buzan Cup: J. Cornwell 26, H. McMillan 19, R. Lee 19, D. Reid 15. Challenge Shield; G. Leonard 28, R. Jones 24, J. Cornwell .14, M. Leatham 9. The final 4 club evening will be held at the Domain baths on Thursday. Presentation Miss Pearl Robinson, who will leave Temuka soon to take up a position at Mataura, was met by a number of her comrades in the Salvation Army at the residence of Bandmaster and Mrs S.. Shepherd. Adjutant Allott referred to the energy displayed by Miss Robinson in army work, particularly among the young people. For her comrades, the adjutant presented her with a travelling case, and from the young people a small gift as a token of their esteem. The gifts were suitably acknowledged by Miss Robinson. Protection from Floods To-day work will begin on the replacement of the protective banks on. the Orari river at Clandeboye, where the recant flood broke through and invaded the properties of two settlers. During the last few days the county engineer (Mr C. E. Bremner) made an inspection and decided to have the work put in hand at once. As the recent floods have done some damage to the protective works near the Temuka golf links, where the Temuka Borough Council has placed tightly-laced willows to afford protection, the consideration of further protective measures will probably be brought up at the next meeting of the council, on Wednesday evening. The heavy flood of last month swept away about seven chains of willow protection from the breastwork. Amateur Athletics At a meeting of the committee of the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club, the annual Easter meeting of .the dim was considered. Mr J. M. Ritchie presided. The programme committee submitted a list of events, which was approved, and the following committees were . appointed:—Finance, Messrs Ritchie, S, Ansford, W. S. Harbrow; billeting, Messrs Ritchie and J. H, Denison; advertising, Messrs N. W, Mulvey, G. A. Washington, and F. R. Askin. Mr H. Wilson was appointed to take charge of the side-shows. A decision was made to authorise the payment of not more than £35 in trophies and to insure against the possibility of a wet day. The Temuka District High School was granted the use of the club’s material, to use at the school sports. The Levels Irrigation Scheme, Work on the Levels plains irrigation scheme is now being proceeded with as rapidly as possible. Improved, the gangs engaged on the work have begun linking up the vari-, ous portions. A length of nearly one milg has been opened up close, to the main highway leading from the- old side of thevSeadown School, to within the same distance of the Washdyke racecourse. Other gangs are working on races which branch off from the t main race towards the sea. Personal • r Mr C. Parrant, the well-known distance runner and member of the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club,, will soon leave Temuka to take up a position at Fairlie. Mr Chas. Cornwell has returned from a short visit to Tekapo.
