Rifle Shooting On Saturday afternoon the Timaru Defence Rifle Club fired the weekly shoot. The ranges were seven shots at 300, 500. and 600 yards. The day was most disappointing. It blew a north-westerly gale for a start, which forced some of the shooters off the target. The chief interest of the day was the Gabites Cup, which was shot for off the rifle. Because of a southerly gale which sprang up, the remainder of the field events were abandoned. FAIRLIE There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Kimbell Women’s Institute, Mrs Ireland presiding. The secretary, Mrs Fraser, presented a comprehensive report of the last year’s activities, and Mrs Waters, the treasurer, submitted a very satisfactory balance-sheet. The following committee was elected; — Mesdames Barron, Fraser, Ross, Waters and Coulter, and Miss Hope Fraser. Mrs Ireland was unanimously reelected president, and Mrs Fraser and Mrs Waters secretary and treasurer respectively. Mrs Burgess and Miss Durant were chosen as delegates to attend the meeting in Geraldine next month. It was agreed to revive the choir and I Mrs Coulter consented to take charge "of a short practice at each meeting. Mesdames Mason and Ross were appointed to the charge of the sales cable and Miss Hope Fraser and Miss Waters agreed to look after the competitions. Miss Peggy Mason carried on the Golden Thread by giving an interesting talk on the career of Miss Florence Nightingale, A roll call for a verse of poetry learned at school created much interest. Mrs Fraser gained first place for premier bloom and Mrs Waters was second. 1 PAREORA Mrs A. Wallace presided at the annual meeeing of the Pareora Women s Institute. Morgan, accom-’ panied by Mrs O. McLellan, have left for Kaikoura. Euchre Party A most enjoyable euchre party was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs G. Smith, the winners being Mrs P. O'Connor and Mr G. Smith. WINCHESTER Mr P.'S. Quirke, who has been on th£ railway staff at Winchester and has been transferred to Timaru, was the recipient of a leather suitcase and a travelling rug from the residents of Winchester and surrounding districts. Mr J. C. South made the presentation. Opportunity was taken to extend a welcome to Mr R. A. Elser, who succeeds Mr Quirke at Winchester. Messrs J, H. Paterson (DUrville Island), R. House, J, S.
