SILVER RING’S WIN
HF B jgjUXIANT VICTORY 3 AT WELLINGTON H i 111 :r I ginm beats Greek | SHEPHERD Iff gjLVER STREAK’S SUCCESS - ml 1 ' lIYom Our Own Reporter.] WELLINGTON, March 14. I<U»e Wellington Racing Club was figured with pleasant weather for fhg opening of its autumn meeting at «fn>stham to-day, and the track was fast condition. There was a large guidance, and some excellent racing Iff seen. The sum of £37,389 (win £17,309. place £20,020) was handled, u against £34,524 10s on the correday last year. Silver Ring put up a memorable performance to win the Thompson ggadieap under 10-6, the biggest bright ever carried to victory in the mile race. The rertptfawi accorded him after his great fwt has seldom been surpassed at TMR&sn. (I , fbe surprise of the day was the ! defeat of Greek Shepherd in the New Zetland St. Leger Stakes by Entail aftmr a stubborn finish. Sgver Streak added to a day of brilliant performances by decisively visaing, under his steadier of 9-10, the Railway Handicap, outclassing a ttrmS field in fast time. This was the fourth successive success of the Silver aasg-Siiver Streak combination, and the Oamaru gelding received an ovatkn similar to that accorded the Thompson Handicap winner. Taumau carried the field along at a solid pace during the middle stages, and entered the straight with a clear advantage from Bntheos. Chile, Grand ©low, and Blue Tiger. Taumau was tackled by Entheos inside the distance, mhlle Chile also challenged. Entheos finished top strongly lor iSiumau and beat him decisively by a length. Chile was a lair third, three lengths m front of Blue Tiger with Grand Blow, Royal Rapa, and Court Arma following, Entheos, a son of Enthusiasm, had the race in hand a furlong from home, although Taumau kept at him right up to the post, Chile lost a good deal of ground in the first furlong through getting on to another horse’s heels, and did well to get up for third money. Summer Hill was very disappointing. HP was under a pull to the halfmile where his rider called on him for an effort, but there was no response. Entail Wilis St. Leger Greek Shepherd carried double the number of tickets entrusted to Entail in the St. Leger Stakes, in a pool of more than £ISOO, but after leading throughout, he was beaten by the narrowest; of margins by Entail. The latter* ran up to Greek Shepherd passing the half-mile, and was only half a length away from him ’turning , for home. Entail was then being kept up to his task while Greek Shepherd was being quietly ridden and appeared to have the race in his keeping. Entail, however, drew level a hundred yards from the post and had his head in front a little further on; but Greek Shepherd asserted himself with a final effort, and the public was raised to a high pitch of excitement as the pair crossed the line locked together. A dead-heat decision would not have caused any surprise; but the judge declared in favour of Entail by half a head. Happy Landing, who was a length away from Entail turning into the straight, was out of the contest early in the run home, and finished more than three lengths away. Entail had a deserved success and but ,for being inclined to bote in under pressure would probably have had a more convincing margin. Greek Shepherd was palpably in need of a race, and as at Dunedin, will do better if again produced at the beating. Happy Landing never threatened danger. The time, 3min IJsec, was 4sec outside the race record. Always Prominent Investors were astray in the Trial Plate, but the winner. Clarion. Call, was nevertheless confidently supported by Wanganui and Marton visitors, and paid double figures for a win. Clarion Call was always one of the leaders, and led the field round the top and into the straight with Sansfoy. Martial Lady, Black Frost, and Le Grand in close attendance. The last-named moved up early in the run home and issued a challenge to the leader inside the distance. In another hard tussle, Clarion Call held on to hold off Le Grand to win by a neck. Sansfoy was a good third, clear of Impossible, with Martial Lady, Hunting Mars, Night Spi, Consummation, Peter’s Pence, and Toper following in that order. Clarion Call has had a remarkable record this season. He has won a bracelet. steeplechase, hurdle race, and a fiat race almost in succession. His dam, Saxon Saint, was bred by R. D. O’Donnell, and is by Hallowmas from Formless by Multiform—Dreamer, and comes from the same family as Noctuiform. Bon Ton, Eligible, and The Toff. Le Grand is a close relation of Entail, bein" from Eulogy, dam of Homage, who produced Episode, dam of Entail, while both claim Posterity as their sire. Impossible was in a handy position turning for home, but had to be pulled out from the rails in order to get a run 50 yards from the post, and thus missed a chance of a place dividend. She will do better next time out. A Solid Juvenile Gustos was sent out first choice, but at a good price for a win in the Pacific Handicap and there was never much doubt about the result of the race once the serious stages were reached. Karl was the first to be prominent from Laughing Lass, Doubl? Gift, Wagner, and Custos, Gay Chief falling after a furlong had been covered. Karl was the first on to the course proper, but Custos, Wagner, and Double Gift all had him beaten inside the distance. At this point, Custos drew out with Double Gift on his quarters, but although the latter carried out her work gamely, she had no chance of beating Custos. who won impressively by a length. Wagner was a good third, in front of Karl, who was followed by Laughing Lass, Mandamus. Pelmet, Top Notch, and Cricket. Custos again created a good impression and once more gave the idea that he will develop into a good staying three-year-old. Double Gift ran a great race and was always in a commanding position. Wagner also shaped well, but did not reproduce recent track form. Karl showed a lot of speed for five furlongs. Neither Pelmet nor Top Notch was ever prominent. An Outstanding; Performance The success of Silver Ring in the Thompson Handicap was the greatest perloimance recorded during the long history of the race. He drew No. 5 at the barrier and got away smartly. At the end of two furlongs he was back in seventh place, and passing the half mile he had drifted slightly further to the rear. At this stage Rereatu, who acted as pacemaker from the early stages, had charge from Big Dock, Friesland, Passion Flower, Solario. Full Throttle, Variant, Gold Boy, Silver Ring, and Fracas, and Friesland was first to enter the straight from Rereatu, Big Dook, Full Throttle, Solario, and Variant, with Silver Ring just becoming prominent on the outside of Variant. Friesland, had 1 the dthers beaten inside the distance, and it was then that the cry was heard on all sides: ‘‘Here he comes.” Stride by stride he drew up to the leaders, and without his rider. having to do more than keep at him with hands and heels,, he crept up on Friesland and passed the post with a long head to spare. Variant finished well into third place, just in front of Passion Flower and Rereatu. with Big Dook, Fracas, Queen of Song, and Spiral next, the last two to finish being Davolo and Beau Gallante.
Silver Ring has set a weight-carry-ing record for the race that is never likely to be threatened in years to come. It was an outstanding performance on his part to give some of the best milers in the Dominion several lengths break with not much more than two furlongs to help him, and then bury them with one of the best finishing efforts seen at Trentham for a long time. The public started to applaud as soon as he began his final run, and the applause. continued until he returned to the birdcage to be renewed when the horse was being led back to his stall. The Australian-bred Friesland gave a creditable display, and heloed towards the good time— Imin 38src-~recorded. Variant did some solid work in the straight without looking like the winner. The disappointment of tho vaco was Fracas, who made a forward move rounding the home turn, but failed to carry on.
* Good Judgment The public fared well in. the result of the Tlnakori Handicap, the three placed hordes beinr* the best supported of the big field. Pakanui, Grateful, and Roaming were most prominent early, and Pakanui carried on round the top from Grateful, Brown Pearl, The Sandwich Man, and Rival Shot, Pakanui was first into the straight from Grate* ful. Brown Pearl, and Roaming, and inside the distance Grateful issued a challenge to Pakanui, while Erua put in an appearance from the middle of the field. In another hard-ridden finish Pakanui held on to win by half a length from Grateful, who held off the fast-finishing Erua to beat him by a head. Rival Shot was two lengths away, in front of Boomerang, Roaming, Silver Jest, and Brown Pearl. The winner, from the former Rlccarton mare Love Token, dam of Sarty, Sartist, and Pledge, has a marked burst of speed, but is a victim of wind trouble, which, however, did not have any ill-effects in this race, although he was stopping nearing the , post. Grateful, a three-year-old gelding by Raceful, was always in the picture, while Erua was responsible for an impressive finishing effort. Rival Shot was well placed in the early part of the run home, but lost a chance of minor place money by being shut in 50 yards from the post, and had to be pulled to the outside of two horses to get an opening. Roaming had every chance with a handy position bn the rails at the distance, but faded out. Silver Jest was in last place entering the straight, and was noticed finishing very fast. Another Outstanding Feat
Silver Streak put up another brilliant performance in accounting for the Railway Handicap with one of the most decisive wins of the day. The field appeared to get away on favourable terms, and the early leaders were Acceptable, Fulojoy, Lordly Knight. Knockfin, and Silver Streak. Acceptable was first on to the course proper from Fulojoy and Lordly Knight, with Invoice, Dollar Bill, and Silver Streak, and Knockfin close up. The leaders were well bunched passing the distance, and another close struggle seemed imminent, but a furlong from the post Silver Streak made a fast forward move on the rails, and it was not long before he had charge. Continuing his undeniable run, Silver Styeak drew right away and had three lengths to spare crossing the line. Invoice was in second place a chain from the post, but both Acceptable and Dollar Bill headed him in the last stride and a dead-heat was declared for second money between that pair. Invoice was a head away from the dead-heat-ers, and then came Haut Monde, "K-nocVdin, and ILordVy Knight. There was no doubt about Silver superiority on the day. In fact, he made his opponents look very moderate. Acceptable put up another good performance, while Dollar Bill’s effort augurs well for his winter racing. Invoice just failed to see the ordeal through, but will be improved by the race. Maut Monde did not perform up to expectations, while Knockfin cracked up badly after getting away well and being handily placed turning for home. Silver Streak’s weight (9-10) was the heaviest ever carried by a winner of the Railway Handicap. One for Hawera Dungarven, a staunch favourite for the Silverstream Hack Handicap, gave a poor display, and was never prominent. The winner, Onewhetu, followed Pukeko, Royal Banquet, Kotou, and Riptide .into the stfalght, and was in front 50 yards from the post. Maine then joined in the tussle, and a slogging finish saw Onewhetu prevail by a neck from Maine, with Pukeko a fair third, a head in front of Riptide, with Geitel and Revival next.
