MOST BEAUTIFUL MELODIES
TO THB EDITOR 0», THB PBEBB. Sir—As one advances in years, the unceasing wrangling of local bodies, quite unnecessary *nd useless, becomes
very wearying, and it is a blessed relief 'to attend a cathedral organ recital, to spend an hour or two in the library, or' to listen to some musical masterpiece on the gramophone. At the different stages of my .life I have been entranced with some particular melody, and recently, after hearing several renderings of the Beethoven "Emperor" concerto, the slow ' movement "Adagio 'un pdco mosso" seems to me the most beautiful melody I have ever heard. Although I have seen several lists of a "hundred best books," I have never seen a list of the hundred finest melodies, and it would interest me to have the opinion of your trained musical readers on what they consider the 12 most beautiful melodies. If space permits, a few remarks as to the particular points to be noticed, would be valued.—Yours, etc., UNTRAINED. March 13, 1936;
