BREAD FOR PUBLIC HOSPITAL
BOARD to build its own BAKERY The finance committee of the North Canterbury Hospital Board has been authorised to bring down a report about a site and design for a bakery which will be established at the public hospital, The board yesterday approved of the principle of operating its own bakery, and it is expected that this new branch of the hospital’s activities will be ready within the next five or six months. At the moment the board secures tenders, periodically^for the supply of bread to its institutions. But at the meeting yesterday, Mr W. T. Foster proposed that the action of the Wellington board in putting m a bakehouse of its own be adopted here. Mr Foster said that the Wellington bakery had been a success for some years. Mrs J. A. Bean supported the proposal, and also mentioned the success of the Wellington bakery. It was claimed by the chainhan. Mr H J. Otley, that there were enough bakers in the city to ensure keen competition and good quality bread. Local bodies ought not to throw out private enterprise. If the board accepted bread that was not good it was the board’s own fault. *ie did notlhmk that the board would benefit by the change or that the supply would be Evans, the chairman of the finance committee of the board, said that he did not think the board should carry out operations which could be by local tradesmen. He did not think the board could make its own bread any cheaper than the bread being secured by tender.
