LETTER FROM MRS SULLIVAN

TERM AS MAYORESS ENDED

With the resignation Of the Mayor* the Hon. D. O. Sullivan, M.P., the term of office as Mayoress held by Mrs Sullivan will also come,. to an end. Mrs Sullivan has sent the following letter to the Town Clerk* Mr J. S. Neville:— i “I desire to record my Very sincere appreciation of the help and assistance so readily given to me during my term as Mayoress by the citizens of Christchurch. Their cO-operaiion -had always been extended to me. I would like particularly to thank, those with me in the work of assisting the unfortunate-people in our midst who have suffered so greatly through the depression. To the little band of people who supported me in this work I can only say that their help was an inspiration to me, arid the practical work done by them was wonderful. “I have always felt under a deep personal debt to the late Mrs J. S. Neville, and feel that the city of Christchurch has suffered a great Joss. Her willing help and practical example to maJiv of us was outstanding. I shall always look'back with a deep sense of gratitude for her kindly help. I feel also that I must express my thanks to the officers and staff of the council for their help and courtesy shown to me. The whole of the staff has always been willing to assist me, and this has been very much appreciated.”

CANTERBURY BRANCH

At a meeting o£ the committee of the Victoria. League those present were Mrs Deans (president), Mfs W. S. Bean (who presided), Lady Acland, Mrs J. H. Hall, Mrs J. Vernon, Mrs Mowbray Tripp, Mrs C. C. Davis, Mrs E. G. Hogg, Mrs H. T. J. Thackfer, Miss Cosset. Miss Skoglund (secretary), and Mr J. D. Fairhurst (honorary treasurer). The committee stood in silence for a few minutes as a mark, of respect to the memory of his Majesty King George V. Mrs Bean reported having arranged with Auckland to send a cablegram of sympathy to her Majesty Queen Mary, on behalf of the Victoria Leagues of New Zealand. In reply to messages sent at the recent conference, a letter was received from the official secretary,, which read: "I am directed to inform you that his Excellency the Governor-General has been advised that the loyal resolution to their Majesties the King and Queen, which 'Was passed by the seventh conference of the Victoria League of New Zealand in November last, and the message of good wishes from the conference to their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester on the occasion of their wedding, have Been laid before the King and the Duka Of, Gloucester, who have asked maV an v. expression of their sincere be conveyed to the sende»’/7:',V 4 _ Miss ibrayton, C.8.E., the . League, wrote to say She wotild be visiting New Zealand or December, and it was agreed, that this visit of Miss Drayton’s will be looked forward to eagerly by ' all branches of the Victoria League. Miss Skoglund reported that the new membership cards and the conference reports were now ready, and would be Sent to the branches as needed. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on Monday, March 30, and Mr C. O. McKellar be asked to take the chair. Mrs Deans welcomed Mrs J. H. Hall back to the committee after her recent trip to England. Miss SkOglund reported having linked up f>s children for correspondence. Mrs R. H. Hennah reported that, since October, 831 papers and magazines had been sent to the backblbcks’ lighthouses, etc. As stocks of literature are very low, Mrs Hennah said she would be grateful if members having any periodicals or books to spare would leave them at the Victoria League office or with the man in charge of the lift in the Beresford buildings.
