RAUNAI club

The Raunai Club celebrated its eighteenth birthday with a successful ■social for members and their friends, held at St. Faith’s Parish Hall, New Brighton. Although the name of the club may not be familiar to the general public, it is well known to the majority of the charitable institutions in Christchurch, for whose aid the club is in existence. The club has an interesting history. During the Great War a band of young women met regularly at various homes to help with Red Cross work. When the Armistice was signed, the mutual interests of these women had developed strong friendships, and the little band felt it was desirable, rather than to disband, to form a club to carry on the good work which had been begun. In this way the Raunai, or “friendship,” Club was formed. The club has 21 members, several of them pioneers of the club. Meetings are held regularly at the homes of the various members, and at intervals functions are held to raise money for the club’s work. About £lB is given to charity every year. At the annual birthday party, a most enjoyable time was spent with items, games, and competitions. There was a large number of guests of the club. Competitions were won by the Rev. Kenneth Schollar, Misses Phyllis Poulson, and Shirley Lawrence, and Master Bob. Hurrell. Items were contributed by the following:—Messrs H. J. Francis (song), H. B. Naylor, and F. W. Hughes (humourous recitations), and Miss Shirley Lawrence (dance). Mr L. E; Vernazoni led community singing.
