Tornadoes in several of the southern states and a blizzard which swept up the North Atlantic coastline took a heavy toll of lives in the last 24 hours.. At least 17 were killed, and many were injured. Terrific winds demolished country homes in sections of Florida, Alabama, and Georgia.. In New York, which was covered with eight inches of snow and sleet, eight people died of exposure or of heart attacks attributable to overexertion in walking through the high drifts.
