BY-ELECTION FOR MAYORALTY
;/-——♦—— ■ " SHORT CAMPAIGN BEING /PLANNED' ; r~ It' appears that the campaign for the mayoral and city council byelections will be unusually short. The elections will probably be held on March It. Thai would give the v two parties principally interested tinfe for a campaign of. at least six weeks; but it does not seem likely that much will be done in the way of electioneering until the last month of the time available. Yesterday the Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, who has been chosen to contest the mayoralty by the Christchurch Citizens' Association, said that the campaign would be short and intensive. In the meantime the association would hot be idle, but would do all it could to further the interests of the various candidates. Mr Beanland will preside at one more meeting of the Works Committee of the Christchurch City Council before resigning. After his resignation has taken effect the council will be able to appoint a new chairman of the committee at its meeting on February 24. Mr Beanland said yesterday that the council would then confirm any resolution that the committee might pass about the attendance of the chairman of the committee at the Municipal Association's conference, which will be held in Napier at the beginning of March.
