DRAINAGE BOARD ELECTION

LITTLE INTEREST- IS SHOWN POLLING DAY IN A WEEK Polling day for the Christchurch Drainage Board elections will be a Week from to-day. But so far the contest has aroused remarkably little interest, and it may go down on record as having been fought without a single speech. When nominations were received it was seen that the Labour party was contesting nearly every ward. Then, with the party, making its biggest bid for control of the board, it did appear that for once the city would hear . election candidates' hotly debating ; ; drainage problems,-,' But apparently the city has no big drainage problems to argue over. The keen contest expected is a silent one, if there is any ■ contest at all. Members who are again standing appear to be satisfied to rest on .past performances, and while the Labour organisation has stirred itself in the interests of its candidates there has been little of the interest and excitement which was expected. 21 Candidates ' Twenty-one candidates were nominated, for the 12 seats on the board. Three candidates were elected unopposed, there being no candidate nominated against Mr J. S. Barnett (Spreydon), or Mr C. Hill (Woolston). Mr G. D. Simpson, was nominated against Mr S. C. Bingham, but later withdrew. Mr JR. "Carter, who died last week, was" unopposed 1 for Heathcote. - His death will- necessitate . a by-election which will be held on a date to be decided >by,the new board. The nominations, which closed early in December, were as-follow, the names of Mr Carter and Mr Simpson being omitted * (sitting members marked with a star): Christchurch North-east >■ *W. R. Carey.
