TRACK GALLOPS

FINE PERFORMANCE BY DAVCMLO * ■ ' ■> INTERESTING WORK AT TRENTHAM ITHE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, January 20. There was not a great deal of fast work at Trentham this morning, but what there was proved' interesting. Conditions were perfect, the weather being calm and clear,,and-the going, although there had been a heavy dew, was fast. The course proper, on the outside, was open, and. it would probably be a trifle faster than the trial grass. The plough was also open for pace work. Red Sun, giving Sunee his usual allowance, and running on the outside, was going the better at the end of seven furlongs, in lmin 29 2-ssec. They ran the first half in 52 2-ssec, and the last four in 51 2-ssec. Both, are fit and sound as a bell, and have worked very pleasingly. H. Cutts gave his team useful tasks, increasing the pace in the straight, and Impersonator went up to the half-mile barrier and cantered down the course proper. Fracas took the eye as being an exceptionally fit and well conditioned mare. Paper Slipper and Nurse Nightingale cantered down together from the half-mile on the course. Variant and Roaming were in full stride passing the half on the course proper, and they ran 48sec. Variant was doing it the better at the finish of a smart, but not exceptional gallop, for the track is fast. Variant went well, and'.' Roaming looks likely for a hack race at the meeting. Notium's Gallop Notium appeared to be doing it better than Brabant over five furlongs on the course proper, and at the finish Notium swerved badly and nearly lost his rider. Laughing Lass cantered down over the same ground. Gay Chief and Blue Garter ran five furlones in lmin 2£sec, the last half io 49Jsec. The two-year-old went nicely. Argentic and Rona Bay finished up their work with a half-mile sorint in 50sec. Rona Bay looks a fit mare. Silyer Ring did a couple of rounds of pace work on the plough. He looks very well and forward, much more so than at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Gay Broney was doing it a bit better than Sweet Agnes over a mile on the trial in lmin 42sec. the last half in 51 l-ssec. but they were both going well and it was a good gallop. Sweet Agnes is forward. Hunting Cat and Passion Fruit were both travelling well at the finish of a mile on the course proper in lmin 44sec. the first half in 51Jsec. KJnnoull Shaded Davolo drew attention to himself by decisively shading Kinnoull over a mile in lmin 42£ sec. There did not appear to be much difference in the weights. Davolo worked very impressively. Kinnoull" did not seem to be travelling generously when Davolo drew out from him at the half, but he was. going on again at the Snish. It was very good work, and Davolo could have done better. Master Reynard and Superex ran four furlongs in 50sec, and Bon Tray five in lmin ssec. T. R. George's team were all confined to steady work, and amongst the visitors were Ethiop. Whyte Melville, •Diatomous, Colombo, Ben'Braggie, Begorrah. Dollar Prince, Custos, Cerne Abbas, and Silk4>ox. B. H. ride Diatomus, Laughing Lass,; and Whyte Melville; P. Afkins Hunting Cat and Passion Fruit; R. Marsh Brilliancy and Caen. Davolo's excellent mile gallop naturally drew attention to his prospects in the Wellington Cup. He has never run successfully beyond a mile and a quarter, but on that occasion he won running. away in fast time, giving the impression that he could have gone on a good deal further. Still, that was 18 months ago, and his best form has been up to a mile, so that he has to be taken more or less on trust over 12 furlongs. It is evident that he is well, and he is in a stable which has won a Wellington. Cup previously with Compris. No definite riding engagement has yet been made for Davolo in the Cup, but there is more than one offering. Rona Bay's Prospects Rona Bay, one of the light-weights in the Wellington Cup, recently put up a West Coast record, and while the opposition she has been beating may not be so strong as at Trentham, anything that breaks a record must be fairly, good. Rona Bay is not a big mare, but she is fit and can stay. She is by Musketoon, a good galloper, and a stayer himself, from Caviar, who is a sister to the Winter and Grand National Hurdles winner, Carinthia, both being by Lucullus from Minsk, by Martian, from the Stepniak mare Stephanie. From a staying point of view the pedigree is as good as any of the Cup candidates. The West Coast mare Sweet Agnes has galloped well since her arrival at Trentham. On her best form she is favourably handicapped in the Cup, and she does not appear far from her best at present. If the trainer, E. J. Ellis, had his way, Kinnoull would not start in the Wellington Cup, as he had a let up after Riccarton, and Ellis does not consider him really ready for. the task. However,. all going well, Kinnoull is a definite runner. He did not please his admirers overmuch this morning, but it was a good gallop. Kinnoull blew a lot afterwards, and it should improve him. Seamond was scratched for the Trentham High-weight this afternoon. With Wild Chase not at the meeting, there will be only one bracket on Wednesday's card—Sunee and Red Sun, in the Cup. Following the procedure adopted by the Canterbury Jockey Club, there wiil be no telegraph office on the course at Trentham during this week's racing.
