KAIKOURA NEWS

VISIT OF MINISTERS , A letter from Mr E. P. Meaehem, M.P., was read at the meeting of the Kaikoura County Council, stating that the Minister for Public Works (the Hon; R. Semple, and the Minister for Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb) expected to arrive in 'Kaikoura‘on January 23 at 1 p.m., and that the night would be spent at Kaikoura. The chairman, Mr F. J. Monk, suggested that.the council meet the Ministers’ party at the Conway river, the Kaikoura County boundary, and that they be taken around the Conway river to the mouth, thence past Claverley station and over the Bluff by horses, this being the route of the proposed South Island Mato Trunk railway, coming at Oato on the main highway. There were 40 men at present engaged in preparing approaches for the bridge over the Inland Conway river, and it was thought that when this job was finished an effort should be made to retain the men in the district and tryto have the inland Waiau road widened. ■■ A committee comprising Messrs Monk. L, P. Blunt, E. C. Latter. H. E. Eccles. Alan Howard, B. J. Mackle, and the engineer was appointed to make suitable arrangements for the visit.

The most pressing need of the brigade was the provision of a reel, bell, and hose. At present the brigade was using hose on loan and approximately 500 feet at a cost of 2s a foot was required. The brigade intended to persevere with special efforts to try to augment the funds. tu l ? l !i. chairma h. Mr F. J. Monk, said that the requests created an awkward position for the council. The people who secured the direct benefit of the brigade's services were the townspeople, especially those in the business area, and they did. not wish to help one section at the expense of another. --.Pf •. ,? said the matter hardly affected the general , ratepayers.
