PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

Christchurch Girls’ School MR C. T. ASCHMAN ON | MODERN YOUTH

The restlessness of modern youth was discussed by Mr C.*T. Aschman, chairman of the Canterbury University College Council, at the annual prize-giv-ing of the ( Christchurch Girls’ High School on Saturday. With Mr Aschman on the platform were the headmistress (Miss P. M. P. Clark), Bishop West-Watson, and other members of the College Council, and members of the staff. There was a large attendance of parents and friends. In the life of the day there were evidences of a very real tendency towards the decay of family life, said Mr Aschman. Many persons of an older generation could look back to a time when the home was a little community in which were developed the qualities that made themselves felt in the community at large. Nowadays many parents complained that after school years their children spent as little time at home a? possible. For much of this the parents themselves were to blame, because of their overindulgcnce of their children. Restlessness of Youth Nobody wanted to go back to the iron rule of the past, but to-dav young people were filled with restlessness. Unless they 'had something from the training they received at the school, and the advice of wise parents, they were In danger of being infected with this modem disease of nervous exictement, with its feverish rush to find so-called pleasure. Only those with good education and home influences could withstand it. Many modern developments had contributed to this state of affairs. Motorcars had encouraged constant movement. Listening to the wireless encouraged in old and/ young people a kind of mental idleness that preferred having things done for them. The .same could he said of inferior literature, and the readily accessible picture theatres and shows of all kinds. Most of these were good things if rightly, used, but they threatened to make people spectators rather than doers. They tended to create a mental void that too often was filled with excitement. v

Older people would be failing in their duty if they did not warn the young of the disintegrating features in the life of to-tday. Pleasure was natural for young people, but the continued pursuit of the pleasure that could be gained only from excitement was a danger to the individual an* to the nation.

“It takes moral courage of a high order to stand against the meretricious allurements that surround you today.” said Mr Aschman in conclusion. “There is comfort in the thought that the training you are receiving in your school will help you to take the middle way in preference to extremes.”

The School Year

The accommodation of the school had been fully taxed during the year, said Miss Clark in presenting the fiftyeighth annual report of the school. The roll number at the beginning of the year was 507. At “Acland” 48 pupils had been in residence, a larger number than usual, and additions and alterations had been made. Miss Clark wished that she could add a list of additions and alterations to the school, and wondered if it would ever have a swimming pool. After recording the success of various school activities.
