CHRISTMAS FAIR
The Christchurch Boys’ High School carnival, held to raise funds for the construction of a gymnasium and an assembly hall at the High School m Riccarton, was officially opened by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, at Canterbury College last evening. A large number of people, guided by a sign—-“ Grand Xmas Carnival’ which was erected over Hereford street at the entrance to the university grounds, were gathered about the stalls and sideshows. High School old boys colours were prominent among the decorations in the college gymnasium, where the stalls had been prepared. In the grounds a marquee housed the numerous sideshows', the hand of the Ist Canterbury Regiment nearby played at regular intervals. Many guessing competitions for articles, including cakes, a dressing-gown, ladies handbag, taffeta cushion, doll, and a dinner set, were a valuable aid in raisin The n Stiidents’ Association building was utilised for supper arrangements. The executive committee, whicn forms dvcentral body directing district functions for the same purpose, included Messrs C. Miln, A. D. Ford, G. F. Myers, D. Swanston, H. P. Smith, N. E. Taylor, H. Henderson, Mesdames C. J. Thornton, and E. C. Taylor. The organisers were Messrs A, D. Ford and K. N. McGillivray. Supper arrangements were In the hands of Mesdames Kent Johnston, Westby Sheppard. L. Q Osment C. Hoskin, A. M. Hadfleld. W.P. Glue, R. S. McKenzie, W. N. Smith, J. Mackenzie, T. C. Pugh, F. N. McKenzie, J. F. Menzies, L. H. Chapman, W. Dawe, S. J Moore, and C. J. Werren. The stalls, which were notable for the number of specially prepared articles, were attended and organised as follows; — , . _ Cooked food stall, Mesdames A. D. Ford, F. George, W. R., Grubb; produce stall. Messrs J. Harrison and E. T. Dalziel; flower stall. Mesdames C. J. Thornton and J. H. Suckling; woodwork stall, Mij A. J. Gainsford (the models being wholly the work of High School pupils); variety stall, Mesdames E. C. Taylor.and E. Dochexty; sweets stall, Mesdames B. Sloane and St. George Atkinson; cake stall, Mesdames B O’Neill,' J. Palmer, J. S. Roberts, R. F. McKay, Harold Smith. Rex Sgrjeant, F. O. Schmidt, G. H. Bailey; book stall, Mr H. O. Jefcoate; work stall, Mesdames C. E. Anderson, J. D. Sanderson, Black, and A. Rumens; icecream stall, Messrs J. H. Skinner and P. D. Simon; soft drinks stall, Messrs W. S. Shann, and J. G. Woods. Members of the committee expressed satisfaction at the suitability of Canterbury College for carnival purposes. The carnival will reopen this afternoon at 2.30 o’clock, concluding at 10.30.
