RAILWAY HOARDING IN PAPANUI
3, PROTEST BY BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION A vigorous protest against the •erection of a large hoarding at the Paoanui railway station by the '-ailway authorities was made ai last evening's meeting of the Papanui Beautifving Association by the president, Mr H. Tillman, who said that the association's efforts to improve the surroundings of the station had been met with ingratitude. "The society in recent years has transformed the station yard from a rubbish dump into a rose garden, the pride of the district," said Mr Tillman. "At the main entrance a bank of twitch and shingle has been planted in native shrubs. Repeated applications to the railway authorities for assistance in caring for the plots and for water have been met with refusal. The length of the railway line between Bligh's road and Harewood road has been planted with flowering trees for a quarter of a mile. In a year or two. in the spring of each year, this will be a feature of the train journey to the city. "The 'Railway Magazine' stated recently that the railway authorities were willing to co-operate in the beautification of stations, and would encourage the staff to help. We have seen no sign of it yet," said Mr Tillman. "But this is not our point of objection. Our society in face of much opposition has succeeded in having Papanui the one suburb completely free from hoardings. That was up till a month ago, and now the railway authorities have placed a large hoarding on the station facing the native shrubbery and the rose garden. It is an outrage on the work of the society, and reaches the height of ingratitude." It was decided to write a letter of protest to the Railway Board, and to seek the co-operation of Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., in having the hoarding removed.
