BOOKMAKING CHARGE

UNEMPLOYED MAN FINED Thomas Henry Gardner, an unemployed man with a large family, was seen by Detective J. McClung taking bets on the lawn at Riccarton during the races on November 9. Gardner appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., and was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop said that Gardner had taken about half a dozen bets at half-a-crown each. The magistrate said that any penalty he imposed would be reflected on accused's wife and children. After rebuking accused he said that if he were caught again the fine would be so heavy that Gardner would have no option but to go to prison.
