On the application of Mr E. D. R. Smith, who appeared lor the defendants, and with the consent of the police, further charges against Lindsay, I sen., of exposing liquor for sale after J hours and with assisting Pickering, j Young, and Grant in committing the oilence of being on licensed premises were withdrawn. Sub-Inspector D. A. MncLean, of Christchurch, for the police, said that, a visit had been paid to the hotel on November 23 by a party of police from Christchurch. They found six men in the bar, one of whom was a bona fide lodger. There were five full glasses of liquor on the bar counter, and Lindsn.y, jun., was behind the counter. The licensee had been quite frank with the police. The men admitted that they had gone to the hotel to have a drink and had consumed -two before the poiee arrived. Lindsay had not been convicted previousy for after-hour trading, but the police had received several complaints and had visited the hotel before, in October, but had not found any living to warrant charges being laid. Mr Smith said Lindsay had been in the hotel about four years. Pickex--ing would take the responsibility for Young and Grant visiting the hotel, as they were dependent upon him for transport to their homes.
