NEW PLAYGROUND FOR CHILDREN
SOUTH BRIGHTON PROGRESS LEAGUE'S SUGGESTION Members of the South Brighton Progress League decided at the monthly meeting of the league last evening to investigate ways and means of forming a children's playground in Blighs Gardens. The subject was introduced by Mr S. J. Grammer, who said that he had noticed that a number of children were in the habit of playing on the roads in South Brighton after school hours. This constituted a nuisance and a danger. The homes of some of the children were too far away from the Pleasant Point domain for them to use the playground provided there, so he suggested that the league consider taking some steps to have a playground provided in Blighs Gardens,, which are situated approximately half way between Pleasant Point and Central New Brighton. Discussing the problem of finance, Mr Grammer raid that he did not think that the league would be able to receive any financial support fropi the South Brighton Gala Committee, as he understood that the proceeds from the gala were to be spent on improvements to the Pleasant ! Point domain.
Mr P. Buist, who supported Mr Crammer's suggestion, said that be thought a playground necessary. A playground in Blighs Gardens would take the children oil the.".street, and provide thenf with healthy surroundings. He suggested that if the league left the matter over until next year it might receive some support from the gala committee. The president (Mr F. S. Woodward), who was in the chair, said that he was in favour of the project, but he did not entirely agree that the league should leave the. matter over for . 12 'months. He thought that.the league should first approach the New Brighton Borough Council, and find out what
i I •• its attitude towards, the suggestion would be.
; The secretary (Mr F. W-i Larcombe) said that the league would probably be able to raise a considerable sum by conducting a series of Saturday night dances during the summer. The chairman: We will certainly have a better chance with the council if we can go to it with a five pound note. A committee was set up to go fully into the ways and means of forming a children's playground in Blighs' Gardens. , ~
