SILVER JUBILEE YEAR OPENING OF SEASON AT NEW BRIGHTON The silver jubilee season of the New I Brighton Surf Bathing and Life Saving- Club was officially declared open yesterday afternoon by the patron of the club, Mr A. W. Owles. Owing to the unsuitable weather, the usual opening day club competitions were not held, a demonstration being given by two life-saving teams instead. There was a good crowd present at the opening. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. L. Smith) expressed his pleasure at the attendance of Mr Owles at the twenty-fifth annual opening ceremony of the club. Mr Owles, he said, had been one of the stalwarts of the club ever since its inception. He spoke of the -successes of the club during the last quarter of a century, and said that it had been the father and mother of both the North Beach and South New Brighton Clubs. vThe member of Parliament for the district, Mr D. G. Sullivan, congratulated the club on the attainment of its twenty-fifth birthday. He was pleased to see that the New Brighton Club had won the surf championship pennant for the last four years in succession, arid wished the club continued success. Mr Sullivan said that it had been mentioned to him that the pennant, was in rather a dilapidated condition, and he / would buy the club a new one. In conclusion, he hoped that the club would long continue to do its good work. Mr Owles appealed for the support of the people in gatherings which the surf club had organised to raise funds for the patrolling of the beach during the Christmas and New Year holidays. He said that it was a very necessary work, which required a good sum of money. In declaring the season open, he expressed the hope that it would go through without mishap or accident The teams for the demonstration were as follows: No. 1 Team—N. Stokes (patient), A. Ansley (support), H. Hprsfall (belt), R. Cooper (deep line), J. Skinner (middle line), J. Cocks (shallow line), and H. Orme (reel). No. 2 Team—A. Cocks (patient), E. Ansley (support), C. Dean (belt), J. Carson (deep line), R. Herrick (middle line), B. Napper (shallow line), and W. Bacon (reel). After the demonstration, afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, and a silver jubilee birthday cake, bearing 25 candles, presented to the club by Mr and Mrs W. Queree, was distributed. SUMNER CLUB Mr S. K. Bassett presided over a meeting of the committee of the Sumner LifeSaving Club. Eight new members were elected. It was decided to hold the opening day on December 8, and in place of the opening day dance it was arranged to hold a dance in the Masonic Hall on December 14. It was also decided to hold the annual church parade on December 15.
