LAWN TENNIS
SENIOR COMPETITION OPENS LEADING PLAYERS IN CLOSE ~ MATCHES ' Senior lawn tennis. players in Canterbury commenced their annual competition for the Harman Shield on Saturday "afternoon on the grass courts of Wilding Park and the United Clulv. Matches between the top-rank-ing players of Canterbury' aroused considerable interest, and some keen contests were seen on both grounds. The grass courts at Wilding Park, where two of the matches wtsre played, were in splendid order, but a very strong easterly breeze took the edge off accurate stroking.' Dymond Extends Angas 'United I, last year's winning team, met a strong Cashmere four at United and scored a convincing win. Angas and Dymond, first and fourth players respectively on the ranking list, played very good tennis in the first singles, and Angas had to fight hard to save the match after Dymond, attacking 'strongly with beautiful driving, had won the first set, 6-1. In the third set Angas's net attack, vulnerable to Dymond's passing shots in the earlier stages of the game, gave him a winning advantage. . Glanville, Cashmere's second man, was obviously short of practice, and could offer no resistance to Robinson's accurate game. . Pattinson, the New Zealand junior champion, played a beautiful attacking game to beat Young, of Cashmere, who is 10 places [.above, him on the ranking list, and then combined with Angas to overwhelm Dymond and Glanville in the doubles. A Battle of Tactics As expected, the all-round strength of United 11. gave it an advantage over Linwood.'although the matches' among the top players of the two teams were closely contested. There was a long match between Barnett and Cant, second and third respectively on the ranking list. Cant played Barnett at his own slow game, with such success that he took the second set arid made a close fight of the third. The match was interesting only as, a battle of tactics, Better tennis was seen in the second singles between Andrews, of Linwood, and Penfold. Both played brisk and attractive tennis, with Andrews just getting home in the third ~ Andrews had an important share in Linwood's only other success, he and Cant beating Barnett and Penfold in a very bright; doubles. Andrews showed that he has lost none of his outstanding volleying ability during his absence from Christchurch.
Corich's Good Win < Ivan Corich, who must be accounted Canterbury'* most promising youngster, achieved one of his best wins to date by beating Barrer, fifth ranked player in the province, in the match between Canterbury College and Fendalton. He attacked incessantly with well-controlled drives and crisp volleying, and Barrer's defence —one of the strongest in Christchurch —eventually wilted. The young university team gained two other good wins in the singles, Duffleld beating Crawshaw. who, playing in senior tennis for the first time in several years, . showed much of his old pugnacity in attack and diligence in defence, and Walls, a hard-hitting left-hander. , easily beating Norbert-Munns after losing the first set - Barrer and Crawshaw teamed well in the doubles against Corich and Duffield to avenge very handsomely their singles defeats, but the second doubles match, in which Walls and Coward surprisingly beat Silvester and Nor-bert-Munhs," gave Canterbury College the match by four rubbers to two.
